| I just came home with the above mentioned 'chid. I know that it is an Alcra./Odm. hybrid, but I don't know anything about the Alcra. half of the equation. What does Alcra. stand for and what kind of care would this beauty like? Will submit pics when I take them. Thanks, Lisa

| Lisa, I just talked to a friend of mine that primarily grows Vandas. She has a Barkeria and she told me she grows this very similar to her Vandas. She has hers in a basket with large bark (It needs good drainage with nothing too compact around the roots), charcoal, and larva roc. Lots of water during the growing season, but needs to almost dry before the next watering. They also need a winter rest where they will lose their leaves. Keep them cool, bright, with lots of good air circuilation around them. Water very sparsely during the rest period. |

| I have had quite a few of them and always grow them like any other Oncidium aliance orchid. Medium light good air circulation, normal watering they do very well mounted

| Some Clarification on Name Confusion Boxerfan's "Bak." abbreviation does not stand for Barkeria (which is a Cattleya-Alliance genus) but instead stands for Bakerara (note the subtle difference in spelling). Bakerara is a cross between Aliceara and Odontoglossum.

| I have a Silver Chalice, and it is sprouting. I got it by accident at an orchid sale, where I was assured that it would nothing to care for. It was just reaching its dormant season when I bought it, but it has lost all of its leaves, and none seem to be growing back. I am a new orchid grower, and I have no idea what to do about the plant or the sprout. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks! |
