| Pretty New Brassidium
Was feeling a little down today. Went to Home Depot and found this brassidium NOID that I've been looking for and there it was! Anybody know more specifically what I've got here? |
| |
| ||||
|
that is a mighty fine looking Brassidium sandra what a nice way to pick yourself up from feeling down I hope it has. nice display of flowers as well congrats |
| ||||

Okay - here's my stab at it. Beallara Marfitch 'Unicorn Splendour' or Beallara Marfitch 'Howard's Dream' The latter seems to be more popular. |
| |||
|
Ooooh, you're good Vivienne. Yup, I'd say, Howards Dream too. Thank you again here. http://www.mattsorchidcollection.com..._AOS_PIC5.html Last edited by sandra; 07-17-2007 at 11:00 PM. |

| I know pikevi, I wonder too, even just solid pink colors.....as in paphs from the mall!

How beautiful, Sandra. It's amazing how your patio continues to grow as well as your flowers! hahahaha The flower looks very large. Just beautiful. How long does the flower last?

Actually Ellen, the patio is getting smaller and smaller. The flowers are big, almost 4". 9 flowers (still, mostly buds) on each spike with 3 more spikes emerging. I don't know how long the flowers will last, never owned one but my miltassia, which I thought up until last night was a brassidium but, isn't (spider orchid and similar makeup tho) that I got last month, still has the flowers that had just bloomed then and is spiking like crazy now, 4 so far.

Wow, I bet a picture of the whole patio right now would be beautiful, too. All but three of my orchids are out of bloom now. Time to buy more, I think. Getting new leaves on the rest, though. That's exciting.

Sandra, looking at those pics have picked me up so I'm sure it did the job for you too. I was thinking Bllra. too, but Vivienne is quicker |
| |||
| I agree prisana and next years flowering will feel even better.

Sandra Your orchid probably has many of the same strains as Howard's Dream but it is not it. Howard's Dream is very dark maroon to purple. It is my best selling orchid. The search feature on the gallery does not seem to be working today or I would post the photo. There are several pale blue Oncidium around, but since blue is one of the scarcer colors it makes your find even nicer. Oncidium alliance are being crossed so fast it is impossible to keep up, but at least they are gorgeous

I do know that a lot fo orchids are into mimicry. The members of the genus Ophrys for example look like bees (here's an example). Other bees come along and try to mate with the flower thinking it is another bee and in that way pollinate the flower....and possibly frustrate the bee, but that's a topic for a different kind of forum. its fascinating, mind boggling stuff.

Thanks kmarch. Doesn't it give your an impression of a 3d-effect? I know most flowers are for attracting pollinating agents. Some are visible to us and some , a lot more complex and pretty ones, are not seen by us, since they are outside of our visibility spectrum. I think nature's best effort is expressed in evolution.( my apologies to 'intelligent design' proponents, |

Vivienne, You are definitely NOT going back home empty handed so we'll figure something out! If plan #1 doesn't work, you'll leave them with me and I'll send you updates/pics every day of their progress. I might be in Calif. for the holiday in Dec. but if not, I'll see you then too. Maybe all us girls can take a ride to Jerry's nursery when you're here over X'mas! We'll rent a U-Haul for that trip! Quote:

Maybe Jerry can help you with the shipments home, Viv. I can't wait to meet you. I will be there. I think I need to build another room on the house for what I'm going to want to bring home! Good thing hubby is good natured! I know, I'll bring him along, he's got a truck waahahahahahaha!..... wringing my hands in glee! Geeks everywhere can expect some pictures out of this experience!

Vivienne, I'm sure Jerry will be at the convention too, don't think he'll pass up on this . |

Nancy, OMG I totally forgot about you being in FL too. Of course you can come..the more the merrier... |
| ||||
|
and let's not forget Sue - she's is West Ft Lauderdale. Girls Day Out!! Good point prisana... perhaps a trip down to Homestead? Bu that's a cruise too. I'll be staying in Palm City over Christmas so maybe you locals can pick out some fun places in the area. |
| ||||
|
This is turning out to be a great gathering. Nametags a must. Six orchidgeeks in one gathering. I can't wait. I tried to talk my hubby into going too because he drives a truck, but, he caught on way too quick. He suggested I rent a mini Cooper for the trip! (Silly Boy!) For those of us spending the night, I suggest a hotel room. No ideas, guys!

Oh, Pikevi, you picked up on that quickly! Thought I'd get away with it, I'm sure the orchids will look much better if it is pm

Ellen, if I can swing an overnighter, I'll stay in Miami too. I haven't been reading the posts in the last couple of days but I think I'll rent a room the night before IF my situation allows ( |
| ||||
|
I agree, Sandra. It will be the middle of the season, too.

Girls, I probably won't be able to pull an overnighter, since I have a 6 year-old , but that sure sounds like fun. Ellen : I'm not familiar with the area, I get lost in their many one-way streets all the time. Hubby usually drives . Maybe Vivienne's step- mother knows of good hotels ? |
| |||
|
This almost feels like a Vegas trip to me. I used to go on weekends a lot when I lived in Calif. Pikevi......a.m., p.m., dosn't matter! No clock watching.....cattinis at 5 a.m. and p.m.! Ellen, LOL...sweaty palms and credit cards....what a combo! KA-CHING!!!!!!!! |
| ||||
|
I think the orchid show is in cocoanut grove. There's a DoubleTree in walking distance that we stayed at once that was nice. My husband is attending a conference down there in a couple of weeks. I'll see if the place he's staying at is nice. Sound like fun! NancyG |
| |||
|
Nancy, sounds good to me! We are in for a lot of fun, very excited here!! I can't wait! I really think we're going to have to get reservations asap! |
| |||
|
I think we should all crash at Viviennes place!!!!! Just kidding Vivienne |
| |||
| Wouldn't do that to you Vivienne. Besides, part of the vacation is in NOT having to clean up after myself.....towels left on the sinks, cattini glasses in the bathtubs, unmade beds......we'll just come to your place to pick you up!

Boy, this is what I get for spending 24 hours away! Double Tree is usually a very nice hotel. Hope it works. Sandra, this may be your time to meet Kevin. I think I remember him being interested. Perhaps he will be like the neighber on Tool Time. You never see his face.....that would drive you crazy. Has anyone tuned in on the days we want to go? The 26th and the 27th is a Saturday and Sunday. How does that sound? With the way my work goes, we could also go Thursday and Friday the 24th and the 25th. I wonder which would be better?

Ellen, I would think the first and second days (23, 24) would be the best days to go....more to choose from but I'm considering the 24th and 25th which will give us a Friday night out on the town with you girls. How does this sound for you? I'll look into hotels this week.
|

Daily admission to show and sales mart only cost $20.00 ( still, $20 less I could spend on orchids ) |
| |||
| pikevi, to enter the sales mart and whatever show is happening on the day you go, costs $20. Just think......January.......freezing cold Canadian winter. Then realize, it's in Florida.....about 75(F) degrees or warmer. You'll need a vacation by then. Airfare tickets under the Christmas tree from Mrs. pikevi, maybe?
|
| ||||
|
I'm really torn between the $20 a day/$50 a day (show and lectures) and the $300. If I can save it up I'm going to do the $300 to attend some lectures and get the registration packet which includes (I wrote and asked)... "We are compiling the items for the registration bag at this time. Your Conference Credentials and other items will be placed in an elegant black tote embroidered with a limited edition 19WOC® logo. The bag will be filled with orchid related items and a variety of treats that are sure to please the Registrants from around the world. Of course as a Registrant, you will have unlimited access to the lectures, the spectacular Show and the Gala Preview Party sponsored by Bacardi!" |

Sandra, I'm thinking of straping the credit card around my neck ( for easy access ) that way I don't waste any precious hunting time looking for my wallet ... |
| ||||
|
bump up the credit limit a little just incase better safe than sorry more orchids that way hehehe |
| ||||
|
If we went Saturday, we could do the day sales mart and THEN go to the banquet. Of course, you're right, Viv, the bag would be great. I wouldn't mind attending a lecture. Can you get the bag for a day registration and the banquet? Imagine, orchid a la orange. Oh dear, decisions, decisions. Nancy, thank you for the great information. When do you want to go? Prisana, make sure to use a quick release lanyard for your credit card. If is starts melting, you'll want to get it off your neck quickly. What day are you going to make it? Sandra, have you looked into prices for the hotel the show is at?

Ladies, Ladies, I was just reading about the banquet at the Parrot Jungle Island. THE MONK IS GOING TO BE THERE. It said various tame animals will be there to meet us, maybe even a primate!!! Imagine, meeting the monk. If you haven't read about the banquet, please do, OMG.

Ellen, I'll make an arrangement to be off when everyone will be off, but like Sandra said, Friday might be the best day since we would be in MIAMI, might as well go for a drink or two afterwards ( eventhough there's always parties there everynight ) So whenever is the best time for everybody , It'll be the best time for me. Ps. I'll bring an ice pack along to keep my credit card cool between transactions . hehe |

Ladies! Ladies! I only wish I could be down there for the event. Sounds fabulous, but alas my schedule will not permit me to attend. I would never interfere with your LADIES NITE OUT, but being an ex bartender and a vary capable designated driver, I'm sure I would have been able to cater to your every need in that respect. Plus pick up some beauties for myself!! I know you will enjoy yourselves immensely. Please take plenty of pics and I can't wait to see the new "kids" when you get back. |
