Old Dendrobium Canes

I have an ebook written by Adelaide C. Willoughbyone, Orchids and How to Grow Them. Anyhow, in the book he states not to throw away old dendrobium canes, just put them in a moist sand flat under the bench, he says that they will form new plants like this? Anyone done this?

Hi CathyG
Yes I have tried that and it works, But I think you will much better luck if you replace the sand with moist spragram moss, and keep it moist, you can also use Keiti paste on the bracts of the canes, the Keiti paste is expensive, but works good!

Lost a Den to rot at the base. Cut to clean tissue, dusted with something for fungi/bacteria, and laid it down on the top of the mix of a large house plant that was recouperating in my GH, working it in about half way. House plant mix seems to work. New plant is now potted up with bulb sticking out the bottom of pot.
