flowering size of Vandopsis Gigantea?

I'm thinking about buying a Vandopsis Gigantea seedling. Now I know they get REALLY big but I'm wondering how big the plant will have to be untill I can hope for flowers and how many years it might take (from a seedling the size of your hand).

Approximately 1.5' X 1.5', and many years. Well, maybe only a foot tall.

This plant is about twice as tall as the plants need to be to bloom. I have two plants that are about half this high right now. One has the spots as seen in Bills picture, and the other has very faded spots. This plant and about 10 other smaller plants were part of an importation from Thailand many years ago. I sold this one off at a garage sale twenty years ago because it was just too big, ~ 2' X 2'.

Thanks for the pics, I have seen pics before but you can never see too many. I've never seen gigantia in real life so it helps me get an idea what to expect.

Vanda,

Before taking the plunge take a look at the culture information for Vandopsis gigantea found at: http://www.orchidculture.com/COD/FREE/FS3.html It is excellent information, very clear. Give it a read and see if you can provide the conditions it requires.

Also note that the species name gigantea is not capitalized. Check out my article on orchid names for an explanation on how you can know if a name should be capitalized or not.

Cheers!
