Question blasted growth eyes

so I have a plant (Lc. Mary Elizabeth Bohn "Royal Flare") whose growth "eyes" have blasted (no idea when). The plant has continued to grow lots of roots and looks healthy, as if nothing had happened, howeer it's already late june and there is no new leaf growth, so probably nothing will happen for the rest of the year.

so from reading online, the alternatives are:

1) treat with root hormone/keiki pro and leave it alone and within 2 years it will grow another eye
2) cut the plant in half now and it will estimulate it
3) dump it in the garbage.

Any thoughts?

Hi Palito, How long have you had the plant ? The bud eye , if it's not eaten ( snails will do that ) or rotted and mushy, it should still grow new growth. I had an Lc. that I got a while ago, it didn't show any sign of growing new growth and the bud eye looked dead and brown. I decided to give it a chance 3 months later, the eye started to swell and split, revealing green inner part and it just took off after that , it's now been 9 months and it has an almost mature growth with a flower sheath ready to bloom in winter. Don't give up just yet..any pic you can post ?

I re-pot so many Cattleya, that I break more than my share of new growth.

Usually the plant develops new growth within the same season. The plant knows it needs to grow to survive.

I would not bother with root hormone as your roots are good. Just give it good conditions and time.

I am assuming that what you mean by 'growth eyes' are new pseudobulbs. But your description of 'blasting' is unusual in that growth does not normally die except from root damage or infestation. You describe a healthy plant and dead growth. I would keep a close eye on the plant for more damage.

Thanks Prisana and Jerry for your perspective.

Jerry: by eye I refer to those points where the new pseudobulb is swelling and about to start growing. For some reason those growth points are brown and dead and the plant is still with last years leaves. no new growth this year. I guess whatever cause them to die, didnt kill the rest of the plant... at least for now.

A root inspection revealed nothing is rotting. it continues to grow roots and the other old leaves and pseudobulbs look healthy.
