Talking 3 new chids today-pics & questions

I got an Onc. Sharry Baby 6 spikes
one onc. NOID with 3 spikes
And the 3rd has 2 spikes. Its name tag says as best I can read;onc.MAKALII'goyoh'AM large yellow & brown fragrant.I was told the AM meant awarded plant> What does that mean.None of the buds are open on any except Sharry Baby so I don't really know what they will look like.
They are potted in 4'"pots sitting in 6" potswith roots everywhere. Should I repot or just add medium (barkmix)to the empty space in the 6" pot? Did that even make sense? Any other advice? You can never have too much knowledge! Thanks, Gladys
What happened? there were 4 pics? I'll try again.
OK. I think I did it. The smallest plant has roots coiled around in the bottom of the outer pot. Aren't they so beautiful . I am soooo happy with them. And my only plants besides my vanda that didn't come from a box store bot a real orchid greenhouse. I was in heaven. Can you tell I'm excited? Gladys

Hi Gladys. The 2nd one looks like it could use a repot, but you might want to wait till it finishes blooming. I don't know much about them, so someone may have a better answer. They are beautiful and helathy pat yourself on the back. AM means Award of Merit which i believe means (kevin I am sure will correct me if I am wrong lol) that the judges liked something about the plant like it's conformation but it did not recieve enough points for an HCC but they awarded the AM because of some attribute they thought was worthy. Lord I hope that is right or even close. I'll take close kevin.

Hi Gladys and welcome to the forum.

The American Orchid Society (AOS) gives out a variety of awards for excellence in orchid culture, breeding, and flower quality. "AM" means "Award of Merit" and is one of 3 different flower quality awards given by the AOS. Receiving an Award of Merit means that the plant scored between 80 and 89 points out of 100. The award abbreviation on your tag should read AM/AOS.

It is very common for awarded plants to be cloned and mass-produced. This is probably the case with your plant.

The other 2 flower quality awards are the High Class Certificate (HCC) for a flower receiving a flower quality score of 75-79; and a First Class Certificate (FCC) for a flower receiving a flower quality score of 90-100 points. FCCs are extreemely dificult to get and only about 10-15 are awarded each year.

I only learned to do pics yesterday! Maybe by the time I get to show off blooms they will be right side up?I'm so anxious now! My Mom is coming for 4th july weekend. I would love LOTS of blooms! And the NOID has me most curious of all.
Thanks for helping me enjoy ,Gladys

The plants look so nice, Gladys47.

I see you have a huge collection of plants too.

I think any photo editing software will let you rotate the photos (photoshop, thumbs plus etc.)

I hope all are fragrant orchids

Beautiful, Gladys. I have an oncid that I've been wondering if I should repot. After looking at yours, I have more time. All of them look very healthy!

Hi Gladys, I am thinking of suing for cracked vertebrae in the upper spine as I attempted to look at your pics. And they are all very nice once rotated ninety degrees to the right!

Adding medium to the space between the 4 and 6 inch pots to cover the outer roots is a new concept to me and I wonder would Kevin like to come back on this point and offer his thoughts.

Bill

Kevin is happy to leave this to those who grow lots of Oncidiums. I've only grown a few over the course of my entire experience. I just recently purchased one (it's on the way in the post) and this is the first one I've bought in probably close to 5 years.
