Dead Harlequin Phal.

When will I learn that if I can't take a peek at the roots, don't buy the plant! Did I say roots, what roots? All this plant had were shrivelled greyish, mooshy strands all the way up to the body of the plant. Nothing to salvage. Lisa

If the plant itself has not started to decline, there may yet be hope. Consider the sphag and bag method with some rooting hormone.

Plant in decline

Unfortunately, the plant was looking pretty bad. The leaves were thin, lifeless and turning yellow in areas. i thought I had some awful pest or fungus and read everything I could find here and in the books I have. Right before I was going to snap a pic of the leaves to send here, that nagging little voice in my head said "Just check the roots". When I de-potted it, the roots fell off. Not a good sign. I cut off the spike and put it in water, then discarded the poor plant. I felt really bad for it. This is my second Harlequin Phal with bad roots, some day I'm going to own a healthy one. Lisa

You could have taken the plant back to the place where you bought it. No one should be selling a plant in such poor condition. If you really want to revive a plant like that, though, just throw it on the compost pile and come back a year later. My latest miracle resurrection story is an Ansellia africana that was "dead" for at least a year, lying on the floor, but is now growing a beautiful new growth with beautiful healthy roots.
