| Super Orchid While obtaining information from Lotte & Thomas website, http://www.orchideenvermehrung.at/cg...bark/index.htm I opened their links page and clicked on the link for GREEN CANYON ORCHIDS LABORATORIES. They are primarily supplying in-vitro seedlings which are shipped in flask bags, one of which I thought was amazing. I decided to make this post to share with the forum this wonderful orchid. Bill Phragmipedium kovachii ![]() |

| This is the infamous and spectacular Phrag kovachii from Peru. It's flowers are enormous, about as wide as a man's hand is long (about 7inches?). It was "discovered" and described amidst a storm of conrtoversy that resulted in a handful of criminal charges against a few people for orchid smuggling one of which was the orchid's namesake Michael Kovachs who was sentenced with 2 years probation and a $1000 fine. Flasks of Phrag kovachii and kovachii hybrids have been legally imported into the US, Australia, and Europe (I understand they were available in France at the last expo). Probably the most famous hybrid to date is Phrag Haley Decker (kovachii x St. Ouen), in my opinion, a brilliant choice to breed with kovachii. I found a spectacular website, entirely devoted to this one amazing species: http://www.phragmipediumkovachii.com/

| Before everyone rushes to fork out large $$$ for one of these beauties, there are a few things we shoud be aware of. Relatively speaking this has not been the easiest Phrag to grow. It's reported to be a bit of a challenge coming out of flask, slow to reestablish itself. As we have lots of time to aquire one of these it may be worth it to wait and buy a well-established one. Having said that....I do recommend we all put it on our which list, make a good coffee and be patient.

| pikevi, Yes, some (mostly hybrids I think) are available on the open market. I do not know where you should look in Canada though. Until they become more widespread though they will be expensive. I've seen them on the Orchids Ltd. website and one or 2 others (that I can't remember now). Check out the link to the pic of Phrag Haley Decker. It's a stunnnng flower.

| Hi Bill, I had the honor of meeting and listening to Glen Decker from Piping Rock Orchids who gave a lecture and slide presentation of his visit to Peru where he visted the habitat of Phrag. kovachii. The slides were awesome and the size and beauty of it is breath taking. |

| Pikevi thanks for posting the link to Glen's site at Piping Rock. Should have thought of that. Kmarch, his site pretty much sums up the highlights. The one thing I remember is the fact that they had to track through a few miles of mud and muck up to their knees to get to the natural habitat. Guess they're true Phrags in that he said the site was quite damp. Glen's place is not terribly far from where I live and he does come and give lectures at our ochid society meetings on occassion. Will keep you guys posted of updates. |
