Light and Distance

Hello everyone,
I was thinking of experimenting with some indoor light usage. I have a small amount of space that im going to use probly about 5 by 5 foot here. Any Ideas of distance from plant to a 175 watt Halide bulb that burns at 10k? This is a pretty intense little fella, so i would imagine you would not want it as close as tube lights? Any ideas, suggestions would be fantastic. Thanks, oh and there are going to be phals and paphs to begin with in this space.

Spence

You may or may not be surprised at how much light you are going to get from a 175W metal halide bulb. This size bulb is recommended for lighting up a TWO foot square area at 2000 footcandles. That would be good for medium light orchids. For low light phals and paphs you could probably move it up to a size of three foot square or so - this would would take the footcandles way down to just under a thousand - so maybe 2 1/2 foot square would be more up to the upper limit of the phals/paphs. Good luck! mike
