Direct Sun all day or part of the day? There are some orchids that if given time to acclimate can take quite a bit of sun. Some Schomburgkias, Terete Vandas, Reed Stem Epidendrums...these would be a good place to start and read up on there culture needs. HTH Shann~ |

Vandas, most cattleya, nobile type dens as well as a lot of phal type dens, schoms are a few that come to mind. I have all of these but the vanda and they get direct sun most of the day BUT they do need to be acclimated to it.

Thanks - I'm pretty excited, didn't realize there were some that could tolerate direct light. It would be full sun all day in the winter though many days are cloudy, and in the summer it would be full sun in the morning and afternoon and most days don't have clouds. It would be very bright at mid-day but I don't think it would be direct sun. Until sometime in fall.

Hi In australia we have Dendrobium speciosum (Rock Lily/Orchid) that often grows in full sunlight on rocky cliffs, top of bolders etc. I have 3 in my yard planted on stumps and all get full sunlight most of the day. No problems, they just grow and flower better this way Should be available in most of the big USA nursery

| Let's not forget Den kingianum. I've yet to find conditions it won't do pretty darn well in! Tony

In my experience, vanilla planifolia can tolerate fairly high light levels, but can be a little challenging to grow. Mine took forever to get going, it nearly died a couple of times, but now that I finally got it to the point that it is happy, it is growing rather quickly.
