Hard cane Den question

I am not exactly sure on what "branch" of Dendrobium this is from, there has been debate around it. Its flower is my avatar. Anyway, I think for this question all that matters is that it is a hard-cane Den.

I bought it as a challenge to myself, it wasn't in the greatest of shape. The two biggest canes had leaves that had rot forming so I chopped off the leaves and part of the cane, covered in a cinnamon/oil mix. The two remaining canes had leaves that were fine, one spot developed down the road but it didn't spread or get any bigger. Meanwhile, in the back of the plant a new very healthy cane grew and grew about 2 or 3 inches (there were a few small ones developing in the front where they were all growing outwardly but the leaves rotted because when I bought it there was a plastic bag rubberbanded around the plant. So my super smart plant decided to grow the other way).

What's bizarre to me about this cane is it has many more leaves on it than the other canes did. All of the others had 2 leaves at the very top with no signs of others' having been on the plant before. It has 3 leaves and one super small one that could be a leaf or it could just be part of the cane. There will be pictures at the bottom for you. I would like to know what you think about the development of this cane with more leaves than the others did.

Finally, my question to you is...All of the canes except the green one right now seem dead to me. The leaves are all yellow and dead and I will be removing them. The canes are still green though. If this were your plant what would you do with it? Also, are hard-cane Dens not growing now? If I remember correctly this cane grew in Spring or Summer and is not growing at all right now. Just want to make sure that's right.

This looks like a phal type den. Older canes will eventually lose leaves. Even if they lose leaves, the canes are still a source for moisture so leave the canes. From your pictures, the roots look good so I'd say your den is ok. These dens also don't require a winters rest from watering, so continue to water normally. Newer growths should typically be bigger than prior growths, so when the new one matures it should be just as big if not bigger than older canes. If significantly smaller then it's lacking something in regards to the culture you are giving it. Bright light and good watering for this den and it should do well for you.

I agree with Synda. If it was mine, I would just keep giving it bright light and water every 3-4 days this time of year; however take that with a grain of salt because my climate is very different than yours.
Your plant looks good. You probably have more leaves on this newest cane because you have been taking good care of it.

Hi I have some that loose some leaves to of the phal or phalenthe type dens
What kind of light are you giving it ? How's your air flow around the growing space? In the culture and cultivation section in the forum they have a link to the AOS culture sheets there underthe Dens its broken into 3 categorys for them. It will be the very first category this one falls under read it and see if your conditions for it match. You mauy find you need to tweek something or move its location to adjust it.
They are one of the easier dens to grow so they are pretty hardy. that new growth is coming along very nicely

Right now it is near a south facing window but it is sheltered behind some succulents. The succulents are on a windowsill and the Den is behind and below those, on a desk. I could do a better job of watering it, I am an avid under-waterer. This has worked so far for me though.
