Fruit in the house and ethylene

I recently bought a juicer as well as trying to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. I'm getting a little paranoid about having so many apple and banana peels in the compost bin because of ethylene and possible orchid flower senescence (dropping). Am I being silly? Has anyone had a problem with short-lived flowers because of this? Thanks!

Yes!! I have being my grow space is in the dining room area when we have bannanas or oranges in the kitchen area I move them over by the sink so they are like 20 feet or so from my chids in bloom. When the bannanas have ripened my phals that were in bloom crashed in a couple days so yes!!! Yes!! Move fruit as far away as you can from the blooming chids.

My mom is trained now either keep over there or don't get fruit until the blooms fade lol .... Or eat it quick and put peels in outside trash. With it in there it still happens but it seems to not happen as quickly when its not so close to the chids.

I have a cattleya blooming in the dining room and we keep the fruit in the kitchen but the fruit (including bananas) is only about eight feet away. The Catt has remained in bloom over a month. As others have said, put some distance between the fruit and orchids and you should be fine as long as there is air movement within your home. You need a certain concentration for the ripening effect and, the further away, the more dilute the concentration that comes into contact with the orchids.

Thanks for the advice. I did notice some phals drop suspiciously after I had lots of fruit in the apartment, so I'm going to keep the apples and bananas away until post blooming. I also found some research online on ethylene blossom drop in orchids.
