Short day/Long day

This may be a weird question, but I figure I might as well ask it.

Most orchids on the market are tropical plants from between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn, where the days are pretty much uniform all year long. However, some plants are from southern Africa and Australia.

I was wondering if some orchids need short days or long days to bloom.

Hi, I have orchids from all over the world, tropical and non tropical.
All seem to settle in well and adjust to your local conditions.
If grown indoors were their is not much seasonal change, things may be a bit different.

Not a bad question at all .
This is why I find the basic books on orchids to generalized for me anyuways at this point in my growing/genera
I use lights growing indoors and will be investing in a timer to get it set right winter shorter time with light and summer longer trying to mimic seasons then the temps and water etc. So yeah some adapt but some are ticky also that I've found. So yes its a very good question

Very simply the answer is yes, some orchids do have the daylength changes as the trigger for their blooms.

Some also require seasonal variations in watering and temps.

Thank you all! It took me a while to realize that I was constantly interupting my plants' night time by having them live in the same room as my desk for work.

Rebecca, you have been given some very good advice here. You also sound as though you will be making changes in your growing habits. That is what makes this hobby fun. It's not just buying a plant, putting it on a shelf, watering every six or seven days and thats it. Good luck and keep trying new things.
