Stuff to watch

I found an interesting youtube channel today. JustAddIceOrchids's Channel - YouTube Some interesting vids on decorating and care. Just thought I would share this of all of us newbies that are still learning.

Well, I don't believe the "add ice" is an acceptable way to water your orchids. There have been many comments on many threads here about that. For new orchid growers, the culture/care sheets here on the forum would be beneficial reading in caring for your orchids, especially about watering. We all care for our orchids differently, and everyone is entitled to their opinions, This is mine....I would like new growers to see all the alternatives for caring for their orchids. I hope I am not out of line with my comments

Watering with Ice Cubes is just a bad idea!!! Actually I feel like is a down right horrible idea......... but that's just my opinion.

No you are not out of line!! LOL I know what you mean about watering and using ice. For my 91 year old great grandma the 3 ice cubes works well for her and her new orchid. I don't really agree with the ice cube thing now, but when I first started buying orchids I did do it. As time went on and I learned more I stopped watering that way. But some of the other stuff I thought was interesting and food for thought. And I like seeing all the close ups of the orchids and green houses. I showed my boy friend the green house these guys have and told him I want one for my birthday. He said yea sure thing babe, right after I win the lottery! LOL The just add ice thing is like their motto for people who have no clue what they are doing. LOL

a nice shadehouse in the background, but what worried me was when he said that if cared for correctly then the orchid could live for up to 4 years (or something like that), now im not an expert on phals, but to my knowledge they can live A LOT longer than that.

and as for watering with the ice cubes, i dont see a problem with it for growers who have difficulties, but i wouldnt recommend it, because it couldnt be the best thing with them being a tropical plant and all. (i know i certainly wouldnt like to have ice cubes all over me)

If we want to help newbies (which we do), wouldn't it be better to teach them the conditions that phals need and how to grow them properly instead of passing off a marketing gimick as a legit growing method?

Here's what forum members have to say about the ice method:

Watering with ice cubes is probably not a bad thing to do...

... as long as you place the cubes in a microwave first and heat until the water is approx. 70oF

*sigh* Well now I feel awful for trying to put up something I thought would be interesting and helpful. I guess it was helpful, but not the way I intended. Oh well.

I certainly didn't mean to hurt your feelings if that is the case. It was the farthest thing from my mind. Its just that watering with ice cubes for mostly tropical plants is a sore subject with lots 'round here. I was trying to say that the amount of water would probably be fine, just not the form, (frozen).

Musica, don't feel awful. Your intent was to be helpful and if even just one person learns something about how better to grow their phals, or if even just one plant is saved form someone having read this thread, I'd say you accomplished your intent. Be hally! you might have saved a phal or two with your post! :yup
