Are you looking for a species white Phal or a Hybrid? If you are looking for a hybrid the Phal. Sogo Yukidian 'V3' is quite nice and readily available. I don't know exactly what the V3 means, but it may have some significance since it seems to be a common name for clones. For a while I was really after Phal. Taisuco 'Mercy Harford' which has really large blooms and an FCC award from AOS to boot, but I could not bring myself to spend the kind of money the vendor wanted for it. As far as species are concerned, I have a Phal. aphrodite 'Ben Yu' AM/AOS/AOC that is in bud at the moment and I am really looking forward to seeing it bloom. I will post pictures as soon as it does. Now my interest is piqued... I can't find any good pictures of Phal. Taisuco Mercy 'Harford' online, except for one of a single white flower which probably doesn't do it justice. I may have to see if any comes available in this coming year. I cant' find any place that sells that online, but seeing how I am an award hog, I would have to seriously consider adding that one. I also will have to sit tight until I can see your Ben Yu pics. Another one is the Phal Arctic Threshold which looks unique, but I don't know if the shape alone will hold my interest. It doesn't look like the flowers are that large and the petals seem thin from the pictures I have seen. I only have space for a single white orchid Last edited by j0ker918; 01-01-2012 at 09:34 PM. |

And, yes, I really like the Phal. Arctic Threshold too, it has a really interesting shape. It sounds like you have a tough decision to make. But, it sounds like you need to pick up the pace, in one year I went from having one orchid to nearly fifty. As for the space concern, you will always find room for 'just one more'! Just kidding! (But unfortunately, not really, I keep on finding room after telling myself I am completely out of space) It sounds to me like you need to start collecting miniatures, that's what I have started doing, and experimenting with mounting plants. Anyways, I am sure you will make a fine choice! Justin |

On a very serious note, something to consider when searching for the 'best' in whatever category, beauty is very much in the eyes of the beholder. What one person may adore may not be to another person's liking. Furthermore, some of things that growers do to get their plants to put on the displays at the award time, may not be something us mere mortals can affect. I know that the pictures of Phal. Sogo Yukidian 'V3's with those long trailing spikes with symmetrical blooms that trail outside of the photograph's margin with ridiculously high flower counts have been put through really special growing techniques that are nearly unreproducible to those that do not posess highly specialized climate controls and all matter of hormones. I guess what I am trying to say is that an extremely impressive specimen if grown in average or below average conditions will at best produce average blooms and conversely an average plant that has been grown extremely well can produce wondrous and amazing blooms. My best advice is to pick something that you really like, and grow it to the best of your abilities. In the short period of time that I have been growing orchids, any plant that I have bloomed, has been nowhere near as floriferous as the pictures of the plants when awarded. But, I am still nonetheless immensely proud that I have managed to grow and bloom a beautiful plant. Justin |

I recently embarked on a quest to find a Phal that I won't kill. I understand that the vast and remarkably beautiful sprays of flowers you see in pictures of Sogo Yukidian are beyond the grasp of most of us, but I've heard good things about it, and the consensus is that even if you can't get multiple arching sprays of 40 blooms each, it is still a robust plant worthy of adding to our collections. In all fairness, I've only had mine for a month, but it isn't dead yet, which is a minor triumph for me. It came with two spikes, but both of them were cold damaged during shipping, so it will probably be some time before I get a chance to see what it can actually do. Whether or not mine ends up looking like the pictures is yet to be seen, but it certainly has beautiful white flowers with excellent form. Sorry that since mine hasn't bloomed, I cannot attest to the the quality of the flowers, but at least it's still alive, which is more than I can say for any other Phal I've tried haha
