Well...it depends on your environment and your watering habbits. Let's start with what are your temps, humidity and how often do you water (schedule permitting/time) if your a busy person and don't have alpt of time or you have a set routine. Why I ask is different media dry fast or slow or even moderatly slow or fast humidity and temps play a role here also. If you have time to deal with mounts and that kind of up keep with watering I'd say...mount it I have mine mounted on a cedar shingle with sphag moss and it loves it watered in winter every other day or so right now growing under lights indoors. I don't have high humidiy here but in the summer its average is 40 to 70 %. Right now watering it lightly as I still need to look up if this one requires a winter rest or not... We're using the heater it kills the humidity in my home so I have to improvise for plants that need higher humidity...
All the medias you mentioned orchids can be grown in but which one works best for you and your environment is the one you should use.

So now ....it really all depends on you and your enviornment. To figure out what's best. so let's start with temps, humidity, growing inside or outside ??

D. moniliforme seems to be fairly tolerant of most conditions. I just grow mine in bark mix and they seem happy enought. It's a cool growing species so you don't need to keep it heated, although I doubt that is an issue in Vietnam

Ok I checked Aos culture sheets this guy does take a winter rest but where it comes from is high humidiy so if the cains look to be shriveling I will give it sips of water..... Dan I don't heat it lol I heat my home the people it just resides in there but I don't think it would endure our winters in the 30's F

I live near Dalat where the environment is so suitable with most temporate orchid spices.( 16c-19c in winter and 23c-27c in summer; high humidity maintains from 80 to 90 % during year). Is it good for Den.Moniliforme?
This is the first time I plant this orchid so I dont have experience enough. Thanks so much.

hey,
i've never grown moniliforme before, but just something you might be interested in, apparently moniloforme is the type species for dendrobium. whihc i believe means that it was the first to be described, or something like that

To Pikkumyy:
That is a gift my best friend gave for me. It was tranported from the north to the south of Vietnam. I'm anxiety that It may go to die because the environment is changed. I respect this gift and my friend. Some of others say that it is hard to grown moniliforme.
Thank Pikkumyy- Your nickname is so cute.

sometimes when you get a new plant they may 'sulk' for a little while if there is a big change between the growing conditions, but otherwise after they have climatised they normally continue to flourish.

thanks about the comment on my nickname. it's actually the name of my favourite character in a kids tv show that i used to watch with my grandparents (the tv show is in finnish and my grandparents and dad are from finland). the weird thiing is though. the thing that confuses some people is that im a guy. but pikkumyy is a girls name

I have found Den. moniliforme to possibly be the "easiest" Dendrobium I've got.

I got some mounted, and some potted. Mine grow in bright light, about Cattleya level light, and grow well with my long hot summers. They also stay outside in winter, with nights down to freezing. I do bring them in if it is due to actually freeze here.

Basically if potted, a fast draining media is good. Don't overpot them.

As for winter rest, I don't give them one, they do dry out for a little while longer than during the growing season, but I do water them.

Although they are supposed to be spring bloomers, mine for some reason give me a little fall show as well.

And yes pikkumy, moniliforme is the type species for Dendrobium.

Thank RCB.
Your post is very helpful.
I'm supprised that you have a big dendrobium collection. I like your moniliforme pics and den.trantuanii pics. These are 2 species I were given last Tue, hope that I can see their flower at the Vietnam's New Year holiday.

You're welcome to you both.

Yes Dendrobiums are my second favorite genus. I haven't added many new Dens lately, been concentrating on getting them all to bloom, but with my next orchid order I'll be adding a few more. And of the Dendrobiums, moniliforme is one of my favs. If I had unlimitied funds I'd collect every variety of them.

If you like the moniliformes, check out New World Orchids, they've got tons of them.

New World Orchids Dendrobium moniliforme

I'm lucky enough to live in an area where the natural conditions seem to be perfect for Dendrobium growing and many of them can spend all year outside, except for our brief freezes.

Michael, yep loving the Australian Dens, had another one just open for me this morning, caronii (sp?).

I bought mine a few months ago as seedlings - 2 mature canes and 1 new shoot. When they arrived they were in flower! In my opinion, anything that flowers that readily should not be difficult to grow
