"Jerry's Grow"

How many of you used this in the past and what kind of results did you see? I think it has/had methanol in it.

I used it about 15 years ago with moderate results but I have learned a little more about common orchid care since. A friend of mine gave me an unopened box that he found in his garage. It has the "GROW" formula and the "FLOWERING" formula and both have never been opened and they have been kept cool and in complete darkness for who knows how long. I'm going to try it on a couple of NOID's before I use it on anything else.

Jerry's Grow was basically Dyna-Gro liquid and methanol.

When used on plants growing under high-light conditions - vandas, rhyncholaelias, etc. - the methanol enhanced the uptake of the nutrient minerals. It had no effect on plants growing under lower-light conditions.

I read a review of someone else just recently, and apparently plants established on, then removed from the regimen suffered badly.

I contacted Jerry to license his patent and start manufacturing it again, and he just flat gave it to me, but I have not done so specifically for the reason he stopped: a high-methanol solution is poisonous and flammable, making it hazardous and very expensive for shipping.

Thanks for the update Ray. When I used it before I primarily used it outdoors on the Catts and my bonsai plants, but I'm sure that I used some on my phals and paphs and everything else if I had some left over. I don't recall any adverse effects but I have always switched my ferts around fairly regularly. I typically have several types that I use which may or may not be good practice but I figure that if one type is lacking in something maybe the other will have it. Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

Ray,

I live within 5 minutes of Jerry and I can concur with all your conclusions. The only thing you did not mention was that each batch he made was different from the one before or the one to follow. With Cym divisions he gave me back when he closed out his collection of them, I noticed many of the roots looked more like ginger roots with nubbins on the ends than the typical Cym roots. I suspect his dosage was far higher than that he recommended on the label. Although I tried it sparingly on a few Cyms, my results are far better with the MSU formulas.
