Terminal bud on phal

I gave my mom a phal orchid last February. It was in spike and bloomed the last week of February. It had a terminal bud, it bloomed for 6 months on that single stem. All the flowers fell off. And now a new stem has formed on the old one, and it is getting ready to bloom again. How long can this plant live? Will it simply bloom itself to death? Thanks for the advice.

It may live for a long time. It may keiki from one of the spikes or it may form a basal keiki. I have seen a couple of posts where the plant kept going and even sending out more spikes after a terminal one.

I am fairly new to growing phals. What is a terminal bud? Have not heard or read about that.

A terminal spike is one that comes from the center of the phal where a new leaf usually emerges. Usually once a phal has produced one it will not produce any new leaves from the top (crown).

a terminal bud is the bud at the tip of the spike that doesn't always develop, and is the end of the spike.

A terminal spike is the spike that comes from the center of the crown as Jonada stated.

I think Johnny B means a terminal spike?

Thanks, Renee. I had not heard the term terminal bud before so I ass-umed that he meant spike. I appreciate you teaching me this one.
