Two new mystery Paphs

I stopped by Orchids by Hausemann's today and grabbed two Paphs on sale. They don't have a name but they have the cross. Can someone explain this, does this mean they don't have a registered name at the time?

Anyway this is what I have:

Paph villosum x Paph villosum 'Eclipse'
Paph villosum 'Sunny' x Paph villosum 'Eclipse'

Can't find the Eclipse or Sunny versions anywhere online. They are in 2" pots so probably won't bloom for a while. I know nothing about Paphs, this is kind of my experiment with them.

Your orchids won't have a registered name because they are not hybrids. They are what we call "line bred" species. Both of your paphs are the species Paph villosum. Line breeding is when breeders will take high-quality specimens of species and cross them with one another with the intent of producing species that have the best qualities of both parents. The names in quotation marks ('Eclipse' and 'Sunny') are called cultivar names and are usually given as a result of an award or because the flower has desirable characteristics the breeder wants. In this case I'm guessing it is the latter since there are no award designations like AM/AOS after the name.

The bottom line is that you have 2 line bred Paph villosum. Hopefully my explanation is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

Interesting. So, as I suspected, these blooms will probably be the same. I'm going to suspect that 'sunny' means it had more yellow in it and 'eclipse' is a bit darker. What do you think? We will see in about a year or two lol...

There was a Paph villosum x self and that is on their website but not the two I picked out.

Good luck with them . Its possible you got into the persons head that named them. Time will tell if your theory is correct

They will be very similar. Perhaps not completely identical in every respect. There is a little bit of variation in the species, but they will be basically the same.

Everything you suspect is certainly possible; to be certain though you'd probably need to ask the breeder.
