Catt sheath??

Somebody please say yes! Is this a sheath indicating a flower is coming? It would be my first rebloom for a Catt! Supposedly they are sooo easy to grow here in South Florida, but I haven't had any luck yet. It's a Blc. Kuwale "shin shin."

Looks like it could be. The only catts that have rebloomed for me have skipped the sheath and gone straight to buds, so I don't know for sure.

If it is a mono leaf Catt, then YES, it IS a sheath, if it a bi leaf species, then No.

That is totally a sheath.

Yes it is a sheath which may or may not have buds develop inside it.

Sometimes hybrids will put up a sheath and bud right away, sometimes hybrids put up a sheath and bud much much later, and sometimes a hybrid will put up a blind sheath - when the buds never develop.

Just when you think things are going great guns, they can self abort, usually a month before you want to take them to the club or a show.

Definitely a sheath. And I agree with what Renee said. I've had some that produced sheaths and it took a couple years before buds developed. I've also had sheaths turn brown and you thInk ok that's done with. But you leave them be and more likely than not, they eventually set buds.

I have a medium seedling catt that sends out sheaths every other week. They're all empty and all of them makes me hope and crash!
Hope your will be a real one!

Are you saying it grows a whole new growth every other week? I am slightly confused?!?!

Looks like a sheathe, but that doesn't necessarily mean that buds will develop.

Yep that is a sheath.

My mature plants are all throwing sheaths now coming into Summer and they will flower in Winter between April to July and within a few days of the previous year, including the new sheaths - really quite amazing how they do that.

Generally - about 2/3rds of the time Unifolates (single leaf) throw a sheath and Bifolates dont. However I have had both of those rules broken. Sometimes on the same plant on 2 leads side by side.

Most times the sheaths I have that form at the end of Winter dont work but there are exceptions. They are normally yellow Catts or minis.

At the end of the day, if a plant is healthy enough it will flower because all the other requirements have been met.

good luck.

Thank you everyone for your explanations. I was so excited...now I'm a lot more hesitant to celebrate . Hopefully it will be a flower... I'll keep you posted.

no... it's just quite big for a medium seedling (it was bought as a small seedling from clouds in july) it has 13 normal size growth and about 5 small ones.
So far 8 have made fake sheaths. It's a nightmare!
I love you c. forbesii but damn you are a sadist!

Do you mean that you bought it as a small seedling in July of this year? If so, I think that means you won't see blooms for another couple of years. According to their estimates, small seedlings are about 30 months away from blooming size. That is if you are talking about Clouds Orchids in Ontario. I love that place!

I'm so confused. I'm seeing the dried skin of the sarong on the bulb, but I don't see anything coming from in between the two leaves, where a sheath should come from. The green thing on the right looks too large to be a sheath.

Look again - that large green flat thing on the right is a sheath. Some are huge! the clue is that its smaller than the leaf - and thinner, and it looks like it is folded (which it is).

I have a few Catts who grew sheathes this summer, some are winter bloomers and some are spring bloomers. I also have a Catt that has about 9 sheaths - and hasn't bloomed yet. I just hope someday the switch turns on and I get a big huge bouquet!

I know it won't flower for months to come, even though clouds, on their site just upped it from small to medium seedling! (Happy dance) But even though I know it shouldn't flower it is still making sheaths for nothing! Sadistic little plant!
And yes from Clouds Orchids Ontario! I LOOOVE their orchids!
