Phalaenopsis tetraspis 'C1'

Hi Geeks:

Today I got my Phal. tetraspis 'C1'. While I was repotting it I noticed something strange, the bottom leaf actually has C1 carved into the underside. Did anyone else who has this plant receive theirs in a similar condition?

Just a curiosity.

Here is a picture.

No my plant doesn't have anything written on it, but I have had other orchids with numbers written in marker on them, I assumed it was some type of id,

Oh, my usual ebay from a user with whom I have done business before and had positive results. I believe being more specific would be a violation of this forum's rules, if you would really would like to know you may PM me.

Mine is carved too! I didn't notice it until a month after I got it. It says "C1" in black pen--the pen ink has gotten inside the leaf. Orchid tattoo, haha.

I know the seller imported lots of orchids from Taiwan early this summer. I guess this is just to prevent ID mix-ups, especially if a large batch of different plants are being imported.

Does yours have a lot of roots? Mine has only several short 1-2" roots, and it grew one new 1" root. Its leaves look nice and firm though, and it's been that way for two months. Also, what are you potting yours in?

I don't have a camera with me right now to take a pic, but I dug out one of the first pics I took of my plant. I can't believe I didn't notice the tattoo. (And I know, it's a really bad quality pic...but I circled it below)

As far as the roots go, I was a little disappointed but it was much better than the worst I've seen. It had one 5" root that was completely rotted and a couple of shorter roots that were also rotted. It has a few short very healthy looking roots with the longest being about 3". It was potted in sphagnum, but since I am not a fan of sphagnum for Phals, I repotted in medium grade orchiata bark with perlite, cork, and LECA. I really hope it does well, after seeing so many pictures of this plant I really started to fall in love with it (which is funny because at first I thought it was kind of funny looking, but it grew on me) and I look forward to seeing it bloom in real life.

Mine and Medelia's are also marked with a pen. The C1 is written under a leaf. I have been told that it was to differentiate these from the white version as they tended to grow them side by side at their nursery.
Ten Shin Garden is the producer of both C1 present in the house. Both were healthy and doing awesome by the way!

Hi Justin,

I think that we're allowed to give good feedback regarding vendors on here (hence the Growers/Vendors recommendation thread), but not negative feedback. I'll PM you anyway just to be safe.

I guess I must have misunderstood the forum rules, so if it is okay to reference a vendor in a positive light, the ebay vendor was pupsi_dog. I know that he had another Phal. tetraspis 'C1' auction that ended shortly before this post and I can't speak to whether he has anymore. I am surprised at how much interest has been generated by this post, I had no idea how sought after this particular plant is. I wish everybody good luck in finding one. And to the administrator/moderators of the forum, if I broke a rule by revealing my source I am very sorry.

Yours,
Justin

I have a different Phal Marked woth an "O" on the bottom leaf for orange which is the color of the bloom. I will have to check my "C#1". Synda got these for me at chicago land festival from the tawain dealer. Wonder if its the same dealer also.

I'd say it will, Emmaye. The one she got me does.

It's written on two leaves of my plant! I got mine from the same ebay vendor. Seems we have a challenge plant going here!

Why not ordering it for right after Christmas then?
It would be such a lovely way to start the year!

Oh, a growing challenge, like a few others we've got going. Since we all seem to have plants from the same flask...

I like to think of it as a project plant as opposed to a challenge. And I think we already have it in full swing. We just have to keep each other updated with what is going on and how our plants are doing.

Whatever its called, I like the notion. Is this related to the annual growing projects I keep on forgetting to ask about?

Kind of late chiming in, just been so busy. I just looked at my C1, had to put my glasses on to check. But yes, mine has it etched on the bottom of a leaf. Ten Shin Gardens where I got mine is coming to Chicago again at our societies spring show which will be celebrating our 60th year! Lots of great vendors will be there and more will be added as time goes on.

Congratulations, glad you got yours!

I think sad when the leaf dies off, it is such a curious thing, definitely piqued my interest. But, I am not going to recarve the letters, that would be silly.
