Beginning Orchid Grower Questions

I just bought an orchid but I know nothing about the care of one...I live in Oregon so I don't know if I need a UV lamp to make up for the lack of sunlight here, I also don't know what soil I should put in, and how much/when to water. I'd also like to figure out what kind of orchid it is if there is an easy way to do that? Thanks for any help

Did the orchid come with a tag? If not, we would need to see a picture in order to determine what kind of orchid it is and what kind of care would be necessary for it.

Hi Whorton.
Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world f growing and flowering orchids.
A photo will be handy so we can work out what type of orchid it is and the work on how it needs to be grown in your climate.

You're going to have to give us more information. I am seriously not being critical of you here, but just to help you understand, the question you asked is much like asking a vet, "I bought a pet. What do I feed it?"

You have to make 5 posts before you can post pictures.

Go to "advanced" during your reply and then select the paper clip is the easiest way. Picture should be no larger than 800X600. Good luck. Where in Oregon do you live? There are a number of good orchid societies here that could help you too...............

when you hit 'post reply,' there is an option under there of 'additional options.' (just scroll down past the dialog box.) one of the options is 'manage attachments.' when you click on that you'll get a pop up window with an option to browse your hard drive for the pix; then click on them and hit 'upload.' when you post your reply, they'll show up as thumbnails.

Make sure your photos are not too large or the error sign will pop up. There is a chart that explains how big your image can be. I find it easier to use photobucket and link a photo from there.

Also try to keep it under 130kb, makes it a lot easier, I try mostly about 100 kb using JPG.
best of luck as it is quiet easy when you follow a few rules/guidelines

Welcome to the forum whorton!
We all experience the "how do I post a pic" dilemma when we come on board...ok...I did anyway...LOL
just relax, you will soon be posting pictures and asking questions!
one warning: we are enablers
....you mostly likely will end up with many more orchids!!
