The MOTHER of all Bag Babies (and Her Two Friends)!!!

Well, I think I just landed one of the best deals of my life today.
I decided to check out the orchid supply at Lowes today when I went to inquire about the awesome shelf Barb posted in her winter setup thread. Boy, I'm glad I did. I landed some great finds

Introducing the MOTHER of all bag babies...
Oncidium Sweet Sugar 'Million Dollar'

This one was HUGE! I counted at least 14 pseudobulbs and to guild the lily, she appears to be blooming for the second time (there was an old trimmed influorescence too.)
The thing is literally packed into its 4 inch pot and the bag it was packaged in was stuffed and overflowing!

Shot of the foliage

Check out those roots!!!

I have it in one of my decorative pots right now and will have to repot after she finishes blooming.

Moving on to my other two...

I snagged a nice Maxillaria tenuifolia (super excited for this one)

And a Rhynchostylis gigantea 'Peach'

Now here's the kicker: these are normally priced at $12.98 a piece, however, they had them sitting on the clearance rack by mistake and I was able to get them for $3.50 a piece instead!!! 3 for the price of 1

I got the shelving i was looking for too so the trip was a huge success!

To make things even better, I also met a fellow orchid enthusiast while browsing the plants. We chatted for a good while and ended up exchanging numbers. Makes me glad to know there are others like us in Southern Indiana

Oooh - I am so GREEN!. That was a steal and a haul!

Our Lowes does sometime have Oncs - and they do discount them - after they are done and put outside to toast/freeze a week (1/2 off) and then if you can find somebody after that week they might knock it down by another half. However - to my knowledge - they have NEVER had a Max or a Ryn! They have only had Phals, Oncs and Catts - and those in the potted/expensive ones (only the mini-phals are 10.95 - everything else is 29.99 or so).

Cha-CHING!!! Man, what a great bargain! Our Lowe's only ever has some sad looking Phals and some really bad intergenerics. I saw one of the bag babies once where the bag was covered with bugs on the inside! Yeah...I'll take THAT one.

Nice finds!

I wish the Lowe's around me had a better selection. I keep on hearing how Lowe's often has nice orchids, and it seems like every Lowe's I've visited in a 40 mile radius seems to have the same humdrum selection of NOID white Phals that are on death's door for $30 apiece. I am envious of those that live in areas where their Lowe's have a nice selection. Of course, it could be that I am not hitting them at the right time. Like in July when I scored a labelled Phal. Baldan's Kaleidoscope 'Golden Treasure' at my local grocery store that was amongst 10 or so NOIDs and a few of those dyed blue ones. Maybe its just luck.

Anyways, nice finds.

Super deal! Once in awhile, one can get lucky.

I have found, though, that at least in So. Cal, Trader joes has some very good prices on Dens, Phals, Oncidiums and Miltonia... about $7.99 for small pots and 9.99 for the 4" pots. Pretty impressed with the selection of Dens. Some have tags, some not.
Home Depot (ugh) has about the same pricing, but only for Phals. At least in this area.
About the best thing I've seen at my local Lowe's, is the hummingbirds that have gotten into the building... they love those orchids!

You guys are so lucky. My Lowes and Home Depots do not put anything on clearance that is not almost ready for the garbage heap. They do not discount them like I hear other members say. I am so jealous. But, I will keep on trying.

Awesome haul! And fantastic prices! I'd take home healthy orchids any day for prices like that!

When my local Lowes carried orchids, they had phals for $30 each. When they were at death's door, they were discounted to $15 (and no thanks, I can spend $15 on a healthy orchid).

Great looking plants at fantastic price. Glad you got lucky! Our Lowes is getting better with orchids a little at a time. They've had Paphs in bloom for the past 6 months or so, for 12.98 and many of them are tagged. Plus they'll get in a lot of mini catts from time to time and the odd Onc. bag baby, so we're getting better. Hope they keep it up.

How cool! Those are some nice finds and in really good shape too. Lowes is where I got my Rhyn. gigantea too, but it was in far worse shape and still doesn't have that many leaves! I'm jealous, they haven't gotten anything good like that in since and that was over a year ago.

Awesome orchids at awesome prices....you did well! I wish our local Lowes would follow suit....they obviously no longer have bag babies....only phals and a dendrobium once in a while.

Best of growing!

It looks like your Lowe's ordered the same box mix as mine. I saw all of your plants at one of my local stores a couple weeks ago. I was tempted by the Rhynchostylis but got an Encyclia hybrid instead. You came away with some beauties.

Beardedorchid- Those are some of the prettiest plants I've seen come out of Lowes!!! Also glad you liked the shelves. I'm thinking I might like another one. I've since added another bank of lights so now I have 3 banks and have spaced everybody out better. Will have to post an update.

I have never looked at Lowes for orchids but I am going to start. What a deal of the century. Well mine was a 1200 dollar chandelier for 80. Hope I find deals like yours. I got blooming phals at Aldis for three dollars. The last time I looked at Aldis they all had huge infestation of spiders! let's see I wonder how far Indiana is? Kidding

Stupid questions are those not asked. NOID stands for no identification and refers to a plant received without a label with it's name or cross on it.

Salt4YourWounds, that is a gorgeous orchid! I've never seen one with a similar pattern on the petals. Nice! I am so thankful that there are lots of options for decent, inexpensive orchids (AKA- the "gateway drug" into hard core orchid addiction).
