Do I have a keiki?

This is my Phal leuddemaniana (pulchra) 'Oscar'. When I purchased it, it had an old spike that wasn't doing anything until just recently. It started doing a little something a couple of weeks ago, and I thought I was going to get a bloom, but this doesn't look like a mitten...it looks more like a root.

Can someone verify this for me? I just want to know what to cheer about!

Weeeeeellllll.....

Phal. lueddemanniana var. pulchra do keiki. Its a fuzzy picture (which wasn't there when I first called up this thread) but it does look suspicious. I think you might want to wait another week before you break out the bubbly tho..

I have a picture, but it looks abit early to tell, could be a sub spike.

Fingers crossed though!

Well, now I see a picture. It does kind of look like a root, but usually a leaf will form first. I have one forming and have a second leaf trying to start, but no roots yet.

The round bump looks like a root and the pointy looks like a leaf.

Either way its a good thing, cause it sat for 2 months without doing anything! Where you see the little dried bit is where it was, everything past that is new. SOOO, I'm good! We'll see where this takes us!

Phal lueddemanniana and Phal pulchra are SEPARATE species. Both are usual keiki-ers.

I'm not sure exactly what I have. I posted it before as Phal leuddemaniana 'Oscar', but was corrected that it should be Phal pulchra. That's why I put it in quotes. My tag says leuddemaniana... This name stuff gets confusing sometimes!

If the tag says lueddemanniana var pulchra, then it is most likely safe to ass-u-me that it is actuall pulchra. For whatever reason these two species have gotten confused and so many are mistagged. They look nothing alike to me.

I believe 'Oscar' was awarded. I will check to see if I can find anything on that for you.

My tag says Phal. leuddemaniana 'Oscar' AM/AOS. It doesn't have anything about pulchra on it. I should have said I was corrected in this forum on a previous post.

Put some hormone rooting powder on the bump and see what it does, it may form a keiki.

Brigitte, as we've told each other many times...ALL GROWTH IS GOOD GROWTH I imagine you'll know for sure in a couple more weeks. (The root on my little neo is going great guns, and the tip is still pink )
Cheers,
Tony

Yep! Just give him his bottle every 3 days or so and he's good to go!

Brigitte- I know it has been only a week or so since you posted, but is there anything going on with the little "nubbin'? I'm noticing something similar going on with one of mine.

Hi Paul, there is a little bit of activity going on with this new one. The one "nubbin" did turn out to be a root, which is about 3/4" long. There is the start of another root coming now, too. I will post pics when I get home tonight.

I think I am going to have to take this one off of the mount...I see some spots of mold on there, and don't want to take any chances.

Ok, I thought I typed 3/8", so my mistake. Here are the updated photos...I did end up taking it off the mount and potting it up for a bit. I need to re-think how I have it on there, and the amount of sphag I put on it.

Anyway...here it is.

Thanks for the pic!
The one I have (or hope I have) is just looking back at me. Swelling somewhat, but not a lot of activity. We'll see...

Update

The roots are continuing to grow, along with a new leaf on Mama, and what I thought was an older leaf under the roots has turned out to be a basal keiki that's growing a new leaf as well.

Here's the new keiki

This plant is working overtime! I have the keiki, a new leaf, a new root and apparently a basal keiki that's growing a new leaf and new root. Is it the seaweed extract? hmmm.....

Some big, fat roots for a keiki. Mine usually start a few leaves before the root. Interesting.

Brigitte it is a pulchra - this is what they do. My pulchra almost always makes roots before a leaf appears. Yours will be a specimon plant in no time!
