Vandas in Vases

Hi All
I have seen pictures of vandas growing in vases. I live in a dry area, and even spraying 3 or 4 times a day doesn't keep them wet enough. Has anyone tried growing vandas in vases, and if they have could they post some pictures if they have them. I think I would like to try it.

Have you considered a misting system? Relatively inexpensive and they can be timed with a battery charged timer. Of course, a lot depends on your growing area and conditions.

I would also like to know if anyone on this forum has had luck with Vandas in vases. I read on a different board about it and am testing it out with my potluck from Carmela's. I put five outside potted in LECA, grown traditional, and five in vases grown indoors under lights.

I have them potted because it's too hot and not humid enough to have them just hanging in a basket. Plus I just don't like the look of hanging baskets.

We'll see how it goes.

Thanks, that is just what I was looking for. I found a vanda, and I have put it in a vase in the kitchen window.

Direction is that window? Make sure the water in the vase doesn't get hot and cook the roots.....I'd pull it back some if it gets to hot ... Are you keeping the water below the roots to make humidity or submerging them ?? Remember the roots need air too.
Good luck!

I have vandas in vases, and they're doing great! I place them outside during the summer, and I water every 2 days or so. I fill it up to the brim and I let the roots soak for about 15 minutes, and then I pour the water it. If it rains too much, water tends to collect in the vase, so I need to empty it out daily, or even several times daily. I've had these since last summer and they've grow quite a bit. They are indoors now because the temps have dipped into the 40s and 50s. During the winter I place them on a southern windowsill.

I bought a few Vanda seedlings at the local hardware store & have them in vases as described above by orchidaddict. They seem to be happy & are putting out new leaves & roots.

Vandas in Vases

Thanks for this topic.
I have a Rhynchostylis x that came out of a pot w bark.
Figured it would rot in my NW climate.
But the roots are difficult to water without holding a hose on them and flooding the greenhouse floor.
Am looking for a suitable vase to try the vase-mounting-technique!

I have a big shrub just outside the window that blocks a lot of the sun in the afternoon, so I think the vanda is ok for now. When the shrub looses it leaves there will be more sun, and I may have to move the vanda.

I tried my one Vanda in a vase for 2 days...didn't work out. It got a little too dry and I lost a couple of roots. I potted it up in my bark / CHC mix to see if I can sustain it long enough to bloom someday. I don't want to try any funny business with this one, because I got it from France. The only place I could find this particular one.

I gave it a go few years back, its a really intensive culture, they need daily soakings, and air circulation in the vases is pretty bad, so root rot can be a real issue. I sold mine off after that.

I also live in a very dry area--RH is in the teens outside --highest. In the house it may get up to 20% at the highest. Zone 6a.

I have a few Vanda seedlings in vases & they are doing well. I also have a neo in the vase as well as Vandierea & a trichoglottis. All are making new roots & leaves. They are all in a window sill.

Honestly you can grow just about anything in a vase or full hyrdo...they're just not getting the nutrients they normally would from the soil. If you can compensate for that you should be good. But like it was mentioned before. Watch the internal heat.
