Dendrobium Emma White pics and questions

Hey everyone! My latest addition to the orchid bench: Dendrobium Emma White. I picked her up from a new shipment at Lowes. I couldn't say no since she looked so healthy and had an ID. So my question concerns culture for this lovely monster. I believe she's a Phal type so what does that entail. Dens are new to me, so what are your experiences and tips. I'm located in Indiana... So I'm assuming moderate temperate (when it feels like it, haha)

Thanks for all your input

Holy Moly!! That IS a beast, and very pretty, too! I'm sure someone will come along with some advice for you...in the meantime, there are some culture sheets for Dens on this forum and on the AOS website. (Sorry, I forgot to grab the links)

Bearded Orchid, firstly you might like to change the label to read Emma White.

You have a very nice intermediate shape hard cane Dendrobium, the breeding is between Spatulata and Phalaenanthe sections with in Dendrobium.

This type of Den. thrives in very bright light with warm to hot temperatures, well that is the optimum requirements, I grow mine here in SEQ with cold nights in winter but I am lucky that I have warm days so the plants heat up during the day and this compensates for the heat loss at night.

Watering might be tricky for you living in Indiana with your winter coming on, this type do not have a winter rest because of the Spatulata (antelopes) in it's breeding. I grow out doors year round and water my intermediates once or twice per week during winter depending on the weather, all I can say to you is that they still like a drink during winter but they also don't like being cold and wet. Your going to have to balance your watering against how long and how much moisture your media retains.

Thank you, Bill!
Yeah, the tag was a little weathered so I couldn't tell what it was. I really appreciate the advice. I plan on bringing my orchids in for the winter. The mix I have drains pretty well and dries in about three days right now so winter will be adjusted accordingly.

A very pretty den! While I don't have this particular den, I do have a couple phal type dens and I live in Illinois so our conditions are probably pretty similar. I give mine plenty of light, and water when almost completely dry. I fertilize during active growth in summer every 3 waterings and then in winter reduce that to once every 4-5 waterings.

Very nice find!! I also have an Emma White. I got mine from Lowe's last year. I got it for $2 is it was out of bloom at the time. It currently has a spike, so I am anxiously waiting to see what it's going to look like!!
BTW, I am originaly from Indiana myself and have a lot of family up there! I miss the blue skies and the corn, but not the cold!!

Oh, I don't know, I thought about hanging a hammock between its canes and taking a nap in the afternoons

Very carefully. I sat it on the front passenger floorboard and wedged it between the center console, a gallon jug of water, and some clay pots I bought with it. Then, I pretty much drove like a grandpa all the way home

The 2 that I have are quite large like yours. Hmmm.... a hammock between them, could work.
