Den. parishii and Den anosmum questions

Hi everyone,
These 2 Dens are growing fabulously but I had a few questions. The anosmum came in a 2 inch clay pot in bark. Do these perfere to be mounted?? Same question for the Parishii, it came in a plastic 4 inch basket it has 2 older growths coming out the bottom and the roots everywhere I've gotten 3 new growths and had one bloom on an older cane. I had to add coco chip to the basket couldn't keep the roots moist enough here and have it set in a sour cream tub with lava rock and coco chip for the roots tangled in the basket bottom. I tried to grow it the way it came buts its not a good environment to grow one bare root here. Should I mount. Both of these?? Or will they get huge? I am new to both but have had them for almost 3 and 4 months. They seem happy but the 2 inch pot will be to small I'm sure by next season and I wanted to help the roots on the parishii but also get more air by not having the sour cream container to keep the root humid.
Any advice on potting or mounting appreciated. How do you grow yours ?

I wish I could offer some advice! My parishii is languishing in my care. It's a little bigger than it was when I bought it and put out a few feeble flowers only once in the past 3 years. Obviously, I'm not giving it the care it needs!

D parishii will grow mounted or potted. It's an intermediate/warm grower; needs to be moist while growing then given a dry rest over the winter, until new growth shows. It doesn't get very big in terms of cane length.

D anosomum is another intermediate/warm grower, but I don't know much about it, other than they can get tall (I have a parishii but not an anosomum).

I agree with mostly with Rachel about the parishii. Although mine is mounted I've seen some beautifully grown ones in regular pots and hanging net pots.

I've seen some parishii that are a couple feet long. I asked a vendor one time why mine stays small, and the ones he had were so long, he told me that the plants from Japan are the small ones, and the ones from China and neighbors are the ones that get big. No idea if this is true or not though.

Baker and Baker states this species gets from 6 to 24 inches long. They also state a cool dry rest is needed for blooming. Mine gets a dry rest in winter, but I keep it in the warm room - and it still blooms.

Thanks for posting this, Emmaye. I needed some cultural tips on D parishii as well, having obtained a couple of keikis a few weeks ago. They are in morning sun, through screen and get watered when dry. I'm trying to raise them in sm LECA with some charcoal, perlite and CHC added.
Good Growing,
Tony

"Couple feet" in my mind isn't that big (but remember, I have sobralias); I recall seeing some ansomum that were around 4' - 6' tall - am I crazy and/or thinking of something else?

Hi Emmaye,
They both look good.
My parishii looks not as good as yours. I think I am not watering it enough. It's in a tiny clay pot, and I am hanging it in my South facing window. It has one thick new growth that is feeding from the old ones (I think), so I need to repot and water it more often. I think I have another 2 months left.....

My anosmum is small and hanging in a plastic basket in the same window side by side with parishii. I bought it from the local grower, and he had them huge there with roots all over the hanging busket and roots hanging feet down.... So I don't know if mine is a baby of those or a smaller type. I should have asked.... Mine started pushing roots outside the busket and that's worries me, as humidity is desired to be a bit higher here....
I can make pictures when I get home (I am at lunch right now)...
Parishii bloomed very nicely, anosmum didn't.....

Anosomum grows warm/hot and does get quite large. Here's some info from IOPSE:

Thanks everyone !!!
I appreciate your input here . Wow the anosmum gets pretty big then I will keep that one pottet but this little 2 inch pot won't allow for much room for a new growth. It has. New roots right now as I speak should I still wait until spring to up it to a 3 inch pot ?or just let it try to kick out a new growth and repot in spring?

The Parishii I may try to mount or put more moisture at the roots with some sphag (just a little) in its basket until spring. But since it winter rests maybe not worry so much lol
Thanks again everyone !!! I apprciate all of you and your help.

The ansomum is pendant (or will be ) and will probably be better off mounted. Doing it when roots are growing isn't a bad time to do it.

As for the parishii, it's going to go dormant in a couple months, so if you're going to mount it, either do if now or put in a tight pot with bark until spring, and then mount it (mine is mounted, since it's pendant too, and I don't like staking up pendant dens in pots, but people do it all the time - matter of taste!).
