| Paph "Raisin Pie" I found this website while looking for information about my Paph. "Raisin Pie" which I purchased at a Trader Joe's in February. It was in bloom when I bought it and it just recently dropped off. My only other orchid is a phaleo. that I've had for three years and currently have 8 blooms on it! Would love to know what my new beauty needs! |

| Hello and welcome to the forum! Paphiopedilum Raisin Pie (or Paph Raisin Pie) is a delightful hybrid, usually producing quite nice flowers. It is what we call a "mottled leaved" Paph in reference to the beautiful markings on the leaves. There is a nice Paphiopdilum Culture Sheet on this fourm that you will find useful. Another great Paph culture sheet can be found on the American Orchid Society website. The mottled leaved Paphs are among the easiest Paphs to grow and good ones to begin with. They like warm-ish temps, usually those found in the average person's home are agreeable, and they like to be kept evenly and gently moist. Do not let them be waterlogged and do not let them dry out. Growers frequently grow their Paphs in plastic pots. If, after reading the culture page, you have more questions, don't be shy about asking. Happy Growing! |

| Posting that image with the dark line down the middle of the image. tsk, tsk. The other two you entered in the photo comp with the solid wall were spot on. OR, are you keeping your cards close to your hand so you can spring your best on the other unsuspecting entrants ?

| Paph Raisin Pie is a mottled leaf paph usually called Maudie type in the trade. Maudie hybrids will tolerate warmer temperatures that the solid green leaf types found in cooler temperature areas. All Paphs should never be allowed to dry out. They have thick roots but do not let that mislead you. There are thousands of little hair roots on the side of the thick roots that really do all the work. These die easily if allowed to dry out. The plant can recover but very slowly. Paphs do not like stale medium. You need to re-pot long before the medium goes bad. Re-potting is recommended once or twice a year. I usually buy my Maudie in bud and get 10-12 weeks from the flowers although I had one growing in water where the flower lasted 8 months. Paphs bloom whenever they want. There is nothing you can do to initiate blooming and they do not always flower every year.

| There are bloom triggers and bloom seasons for many Paphs same as other orchids. For example, the cool-growing green-leaved ones usually bloom in autumn-winter. The cold-growing Paph species like armeniacum and micranthum have a bloom cycle that is triggered by the cold season. Unless you can give them about 40F for a while they will most likely not flower as that is their "trigger." |
