my first visit to Trader Joes!

WOW! what an awesome store with lots of yummy treats! They had the awesomest selection of gorgeous plants! They were all phals except this little beauty that I picked up.

can anyone ID this orchid? It was labeled as a phal but it is most certainly not a phal! The flowers are such a cool color.

Perhaps an Oncidium Intergeneric? It looks like it might have some Brassia in it.

You can get some pretty nice size photos on here by uploading via Photobucket or similar sites. Just click the little mountain icon above the text box and copy/paste a direct link to the image. It should show up much larger this way.

so after this orchid is ID'd, how would I go about repotting? it is in sphag moss which I am not a big fan of. I have really great results with better-gro chid mix with my phals, but i'm not sure how to care for this one. would it be the same as phals?

My preference is a mix of small bark, large perlite and charcoal. They have fine roots and so far so good. Beautiful plant and flowers.

I've got my Oncidiums in a fine bark mix. It really helps the tiny roots get the best water absorption possible outside of sphagum moss. Repotme.com has some good stuff you may want to check out.

I would say in the oncidium family, reminds me of one of my wilsonaras, the size and shape of the plant, that is just a guess?? I use coco cubes for all of mine now, good drainage and air movement. I am experimenting though, with one....a little sphagnun at the bottom and plain old rocks in the rest of the pot.
Very good find

Congrats on your find! It looks similar to Odontocidium Catatante, but without a tag, you can never be 100% sure of the ID, because many different hybrids look similar. Does your tag tell you which nursery it came from? Perhaps you could look up the nursery's website and see if there's more info.

no, unfortunately the tag has no info at all. But, I could always ask at the store, maybe they know? thanks!

Empress, I highly encourage you to go to TJ's The ones here in So. Cal is exceptional in having very good orchids. I had picked up even Rhynchostylis in the past.

I have bought Paph's there before. You just have to keep checking everytime you go there for your groceries.

TJ's introduced me to Onc. Twinkles. Haven't seen any recently but I keep searching! I will definitely go sometime this week.
