orchid blooms and heat

Hello everyone,
I have a dendrobium in my very hot greenhouse that should be in full bloom soon. Will the blooms last longer if I bring it inside while it is blooming then take it back to my greenhouse after the blooms are finished? I've been wondering if this awful heatwave we're having will be rough on the blooms and cause them to drop sooner than they should, or does temperature make no difference? Another question.....if high heat does have an affect on bloom time, will moving the plant inside stress it, since it's not used to being in the house?

I would appreciate any advice,
Vicki

My white dendrobium (picture in my album) got indoors when I saw the spikes, so far since May 15th it's still in full bloom...but then there's no heatwave that time...getting the plant from the comforts of indoors to outdoors heatwave is traumatic....but getting a flowering plant from out of the summer heat to a comfortable condition will make it happy...and blooms will last longer...I don't think it will get traumatized, it will even thank you

I have moved a few plants from a hotter room into a cooler room to keep the blooms around longer.

The heat does effect the blooms, it shortens their life span because they loose more water to the air (unless the humidity is very very high). It depends on the type of plant too.

Most of my Dendrobiums were very tolerant - I moved it from hot to cool and it didn't seem to mind. However, you might want to make it in stages if you make an adjustment over 20 degrees, do it gradually. Bringing a plant from a hot greenhouse into an air-conditioned building can be a big shock. Its not only cooler - its also drier.

Other Orchids may complain, slow down or blast (Phals, Paphs and Catts come to mind).

I chanced it because I didn't like having blooms open for only a week when they could last a month or more.

However, if you bring them in while in bud - then you may have to wait longer for them to open. One took almost a week to open its first bud!

Think of it this way - Heat = faster, Cool = slower.

i bring in blooming plants all the time from the greenhouse to the house....and it seems that the blooms last an awfully long time in the house.....the heat wave has been stressing out my bloomers quite a bit in the greenhouse, blooms are fading a lot faster than normal...

Hi dounoharm...
Now that I've read yours, Anky's and Dendian's replys...I'm gonna bring mine inside, too. I've just gotta figure out how to make the transition from my super-hot greenhouse to a much cooler environment here inside as stressless as poss. on my den, though.

Thanks for your help,
Vicki

I second, third, and fourth everyone else's comments. Heat shortens the life of flowers.

The very hot lanai down here doesn't seem to bother the blooms on my dends or phals. Don't have any other blooms out there to compare. My oncidium alliance and Paphs are in here with me in a/c! (The Dend. Salaya Candy, not only made a 2,000 mile trip shipped in a box in gosh knows what kind of hot weather in full bloom...it's still blooming and looking good!)
Cheers,
Tony

I guess part of the reason I became concerned about the heatwave affecting my "almost" blooming den is because the blooms on one of my oncidiums lasted only a very short time in my greenhouse a few weeks ago...plus I began to think back on my past den blooms. As for my phals, they displayed very nice blooms in the late fall, winter and into the spring. They stayed in bloom a very long time but I don't have any summer phals, so I don't have a comparison to make there, either. From what I have learned from the members who replied to me, you were very lucky with your Salaya Candy. I hope it continues to bloom nicely for you.

Thanks for your reply and help,
Vicki

Shortly after I hit the "submit" button to thank you for your advice, I remembered another question that I meant to ask you: Are budding spikes affected by high heat, as well? Would you suggest that I also bring them inside when it's very, very hot in my greenhouse....or is that not a consideration?

I'm sorry I forgot to ask you this question in my other post, but I would appreciate your advice again, please.
Vicki

I bring a lot of my blooming plants in to enjoy them. It does seem like they last longer. I have 3 dens in bloom right now which are outdoors in this heat and humidity. 2 have been in bloom 2-3 weeks and the other is just opening. I also have a few phals that are outdoors and they also so far have been open a few weeks. None of these are showing any signs of fading out yet.

I bring my blooming orchids inside to enjoy. My one phal left blooming has been in bloom since April and it made the trip in the car from S Florida to Greenville, SC area. My other phals were very droopy even in the fairly deep shade outside here. Florida has the breeze and humidity. Right now in this area it is so hot and dry. I'm misting them a couple times a day. Wondering if I should bring in all the phals? Or will they acclimate? At first their leaves seemed like they were cooking in the high heat. It is 99 here today. Den Kathy Beck is getting ready to bloom. I'm leaving it outside until one of the buds open. It seems to like the area.
