New growth in strange place

While watering the chids this morning, I saw this nice new growth coming from a peculiar spot on my Slc. Final Touch 'Mendenhall'. It seems to be coming out of the side of newest pseudobulb.

Has anyone seen this before? This plant seems healthy, and was repotted about the beginning of May.

That's where new growths come from in Cattleya Alliance hybrids. It's perfectly normal. The correct name of your orchid is Cattleya Final Touch 'Mendenhall'. It has Cattleya Drumbeat as one of its parents so it should be a BEAUTY! Have you flowered it yet?

Yeah, that looks normal to me too. Since the growth is a little bit elevated above the potting mix, the new roots might (but probably won't) have a little trouble figuring out where the potting mix is. If that happens, you can just mound a bit of the mix around the base of the new growth. That's not likely to be necessary, but something to keep in mind.

No, I haven't flowered it yet. I got it last March at Carter & Holmes as a seedling. It's put on several new growths since then, and there are 2 sheaths that haven't offered any buds yet. There may be something percolating in the newest sheath...

The previous growths seemed to come more from the rhizome, which is why I asked about this one. But I'm glad to hear from everyone that it's normal!
