can anyone tell me what type of dendrobium this is?

Hi! Got this den orchid off the Lowes clearance rack. It looks really healthy, nice roots and some new offshoots forming. I repotted it into some Better-Gro orchid mix as I have great success with it in my conditions.

Was just wondering if anyone could tell if this is an evergreen type, Phal type, or deciduous type? I'm curious about the watering, I've read that some need a great deal of water in growth season and I know my phallies like it a bit drier.

If anyone could give me some clues, it would be great! Dont want to kill this one, am curious to the flower color as I bought it after blooms were gone. YAY, I love surprises!

thanks everyone!

It looks like it's probably a phal-type.

agreed; no dry rest period. in my house, they're weeds. i pot mine in clay pots in lava rock, keep them in a west window and water well once a week.

I have my plants under T5 flourescent lights. They really love them, there is much growth! So I can pretty much treat it like my phals? Sounds perfect.

thanks everyone very much! love this forum!

should I peel that dead stuff off of the canes, or just leave them alone?

peel it if it comes off easily, but don't stress over it.

also, 'phal' in this case mean phalanthe, not phalaenopsis.

most dendrobia need much higher light than you'd give a phalaenopsis. the nurseries in thailand grow them in pots on the ground in direct sun. if you have a higher light end of the bench, i'd slowly move it over there.

my phalaenopses get filtered morning sun; the dendrobia get several hours of direct afternoon sun.

I am sorry to say, but it looks like it's a bit overpotted. Dens like to be potbound in the smallest possible pot, just big enough to fit the roots...
Their roots don't like to sit in the extra moisture in the medium at all. They start rotting with a lot of medium around the roots. This is my observation with my own Dens, plus many geeks were suggesting it to me when I started growing them.
I personnaly would like to see the roots through the sides of the clear pot, that's how tight in the pot I would pot them.......

I will definitely be working on repotting it, there are 2 separate plants in the one pot. I agree though, there's def. lots of extra space.
