| Zygopetalum Advance Australia in bloom !
Not bad for an apartment dweller...it has a sturdy bloom and it is happy with the humid summer by the window sill...to save water, I take five plants with me and put the shower nozzle at mist/steam setting

@ Michael ...I got this a year ago in a charity auction. It has a coconut chocolatey kinda smell -------0------ The parent plants of Z. Advance Australia are Z. Titanic and Z. Helen-Ku. (this is what I have gathered so far) Last edited by Anky; 07-13-2011 at 05:50 PM. |

Your zygo is gorgeous. I have one for about 2 years and looks like the same size as yours. But, it has only flowered 1x. What do you do to make it bloom? I'm jealous. Thanks.

I dont know Beezermommy...you live in Florida; a better weather condition that is conducive for any orchid to thrive and bloom (you dont have frost to kill plants as I do in NY)...My zygo is an apatment dweller so it gets lots of sun in winter indoors with a humidifier and this spring when the frost was gone it lives outside my windowsill from sunrise to 10am...then gets shaded by the tall neighboring buildings. The summers in NYC is hot and very humid (we practically breathe water)maybe thats a factor...I take 5 of my plants to the shower with me and set the nozzle to hot steam/mist that my body can take to wash myself and save water...then I let it drip till I am fully clothed and had breakfast...then it gets back to its place on my bay window(this gets watered this way every 3 days interval)...this gets fertilizer( 5 min soaked in a basin of worm tea=one capful to a gallon with the mexican seaweed liquid mix=one capful to a gallon ) every other week...I just replanted it last month in a clear glass cereal bowl I got from Target (bored holes on the glass with 1/2 inch diamond coated drill) ...then it just bloomed on me this week...I get bored so I like to replant and agitate the roots to a better looking container. I seem to have extreme aversion to plastic containers ...they look ugly...I like the celadon... the expensive clay or porcelain bisque, I tried to bore holes on expensive crystal vases since they look classy and nicely shaped; but I was advised not to do it and leave the handblown art works alone...maybe agitation of the roots did it or the sun on the roots did it...this is the third time Ive seen it bloom since I got it(I got it in my posession already blooming a year and a half ago)...my vandas are very happy this summer and spiked on me simultaneously...I will post pictures when they are fully bloomed...they are still budding

| Probably bred (at least originally) by Stephen Monkhouse/Adelaide Orchids.

Zygos are big here in Australia and Monkhouse had a huge breeding program. I should also like to add that the name Advance Australia probably came form our national anthem the title of which is Advance Australia Fair.
