problem with my cym

hello everyone I have been searching and have not found an answer to this particular question. I have 2 cyms and they both were doing great they flowered and then I repotted them. As I repotted 1 of them I noticed the start to 2 new pbulbs and lots of new growing tips. Well both of the new pbulbs have since rotted off . I moved it to another cooler location and it got drowned...so another repot in smaller pot and removed all the rotted roots. Well I noticed another new pbulb and the same thing is happening it is rotting too It is facing south under a canopy so only morning sun..water using skewers and it getting high nit fert with clear waterings in between. What am I doing wrong. The other cym facing east I did a quick check when I repotted the other to make sure it was ok and it's growing 2 new pbulbs and seems fine. I have had no leaf loss at all. Help! Thanks

hopefully you can see the pbulb..it's the black thing

Looks like it may not be drying out enough between waterings. In my experience Cyms should be in bright light all day which usually helps dry the media. It could also be caused by a fungal or bacterial infection.

G'Day Mattryan

I find the notes put out by the NSW Orchid society are pretty spot on, so instead of going into a rig morale I refer you to their website. Pay particular note to the watering section, and remember this Australia they are talking about! Works for me.

To much water and not enough sun. Cym's will take a good dose of direct morning sun with as much light as you can give them the rest of the day. Mine get direct sun until 10 or so then bright light the rest of the day. Benin neglect is my motto. Check the color of the leaves. If they are dark green its a sign of to much shade. They should have a slight yellowish tinge. I fertilyze mine on the "whenever I remember" method. As I get older those times are fewer and fewer. LOL.
Good Luck

cym ?

Thankyou for the replies and I will check out the website. Not drying out isn't the problem and it gets full sun til after 11 am. I have a larger cym and it's on east side of house and gets far less sun. Fungal is probably what could be happening. Thanks again for the preplies..it won't let me post a bigger pic of it.

When I have that problem it is rot. It got in somehow (usually at the base) and is eating my new growths. Pull it out of the pot (again - I know) - remove anything that is black and mushy and sterilize it as best as possible (I soak it in Physan 20). Then you repot it (if it has good roots), watch it and hope it didn't get into any more bulbs. I find it usually hits the new growth first - then it attacks the older growths.

Good Luck!

I had the same problem once. I was getting water in the new growths and it wasn't drying out by night fall was trapped in the leaf folds. So now I'm careful to not get water into the new growths and I haven't lost any to rotting out or off.
Good luck with yours
Emmaye
Ps. When it rains I put them under cover now also another member had the problem with rain getting trapped in the leaf folds over night and temps etc and had the same rot issue.

My experience with repotting cymbidiums: after repotting, the plant is placed in an area with heavier shade than normal, and should be kept cool and slightly on the dry side for several weeks. This encourages the growth of new roots into the new medium. I water the repotted plant after a day or so in the new mix, and water the first time with a dilute solution of Physan or Naccosan, which is a bactericide and fungicide, to help reduce the likelihood of fungal or bacterial disease in the newly repotted plant. Watering with a dilute solution of Subdue may also help control disease after repotting. Use of an anti-transpirant as a spray or drench after dividing and repotting may help reduce the moisture stress on the plant.
