Is this normal?

G'Day All

This cymbidium has flowered (sortof) and the blooms have reached this stage and don't seem to want to open any further? Have you seen this before?

Cheers
Bernie

I saw that in your other post and I actually like it I didn't know if its abnormal or not I just though it was fancy or something in its gene pool lines bread that way ....huh well maybe steve/sonia are right maybe its a first bloom for yours also... How many p/b's does this plant have at this time ? Just curious.... I really do like its "sleepy look" its one of my faves of them you have there in the other post.

G'Day Steve and Emmaye

I like it also it does have the cross on the tag, and the flowers are about the size of a golf ball. Guess I will have to wait and see. It's one of the collection I bought last year that I had to clean up and repot so is first bloom for me.

Cheers
Bernie

I would want to see successive years flowerings before drawing any conclusions but it may just be a habit inherited from one of its parents. If you know what the cross is you could look up what the parents look like...

That is a very pretty cym. Very delicate looking. It could be b/c as others said the first bloom. Guess the only thing to do is take photos to use for comparison and wait patiently for the next blooming season.

A really beautiful bloom. Knowing almost nothing about cyms. I can only speculate: It looks like the blooms are opened enough to be pollinated, and that would be all that mother nature would care about, and I have heard of certain orchids that don't open their blooms fully. That said, I agree with the general consensus. I think you'd need to wait for more blooms in the future to know if this will always be the way it blooms or they open down the road.
Either way, I think it's certainly a KEEPER
Cheers,
Tony

Well some Cymbids are naturally cuppy. Have you flowered this plant before? And if so, was it cuppy then too? Sometimes when it is very cold it seems to me that some cymbids stay cuppy. Have you had a cold winter?

G'Day Kevin

This is one of the cyms I bought last year as a deceased collection, I had to repot them all and get rid of old dead backbulbs etc. so this is the first time flowering for me. I will make a note to check next season. Hasn't been below about 8 deg C, so not that cold I wouldn't have thought. Thanks for your reply all.

Cheers
Bernie
