Stalite

Has anyone used stalite, and if so how did you like it? I grow Phals, and thought I could mix some with the moss mix that I have. Is this product like any of the others that are on the market ie alifor etc. Looking forward to the answers.

I use stalite and yes, I like it. I have the small and the medium and I use it to help keep some of my mixes "open" and to improve drainage. It's very dusty so be sure and rinse well. Remember, it's a volcanic product so don't breath the dust.

It's different than LECA...the shapes are irregular and the small is much smaller than LECA.

Food for thought...I've had really good luck mixing sphag w/tree fern fiber for my phals. It keeps the sphag open and airy...and it's cheaper than the stalite.

[SIZE="3"]Can't say I've used it, but I now have a couple of orchids I recently purchased potted in it. So far I like it a lot. I think the irregular shape is better than LECA for a lot of plants and it does retain some water pretty well. I'm currently looking for a fairly local supply, as I wouldn't want to have anything that heavy shipped. I did see tons of it on my recent visit down to Odoms Orchid greenhouses, and posted some pics on another thread. I think it would be great to lighten any mix as Katrina does. Sounds like a good tip about the tree fern as well, but that's something else that's hard to find around here.

Shann uses it, and does so beautifully.
I too am looking for a local supplier, or at least one that is not all the way across country
I use coconut fiber to open up my spag. mix.... but i am still in experimental orchid newbie phase
