BLC Bryce Canyon Splendiferous

I bought one of these in bloom about three years ago. I have never been able to get a re-bloom, and I'm really not sure why. I have lots of new growth, and something that might be a bud grows out each year. But no blooms.

I have eight Phals and one Oncidium, and no problem with any of these. They bloom 3-4 times each year.

I must be missing something about the culture required for success with the Bryce Canyon. I tried searching, but did not find anything specific.

High light most likely. When catt alliance doesn't re bloom its usually not enough light.

Without taking over Kevin's job as resident nomenclature expert, it should be written:

Rlc Bryce Canyon 'Spendiferous'

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with orchids4me, they do need a lot of light and minimum temps around 8C. I would try in put it in a brighter position and see how it goes, it may not need a lot more light considering the other plants you are growing but try a spot that gets a little more.

Do you grow outside or under lights?

I grow under lights indoors. I have a small collection, so all the plants get maximum light exposure.

I changed to "real" grow lights two years ago. That increased bloom production for all my orchids - except the Bryce Canyon.

I just googled your orchid and it is the just gorgeous. Hot pink w/yellow center.

Have to agree with the rest. Needs more light. Catts can take very high direct light. If you got it in bloom then it should bloom again providing you give it the right culture. When was the last time you repotted?

i have 2 bryce canyon crosses and i think both of them like even more light than the average catt to flower...the leaves should be a yellowish green....not bright green....gl

Turns out I am a maroon!!! I checked the bulbs in my lights, and the two directly above the 'Splendiferous' were regular dumb light bulbs.

I had four high quality bulbs for the higher two rows, but not for the bottom. I went to the store today and replaced the bottom ones with the higher quality "Plant Growth" bulbs.

Six months later, and the plant shows lots more new growth - but the new shoots still don't seem to have any buds.

I'm about ready to give away this orchid. With my current setup, I simply can NOT give it enough light.

Hi rgrosz, Don't throw in the towel just yet! Catts can be tricky sometimes. I had a catt noid that wouldn't rebloom for me also. I realized that in trying to increase the light I had moved it too close and the hi temps were burning and drying out the plant. I moved it, increased the humidity added a blooming fertilizer and put my lights on a timer for 11hrs. This also helped lower the night temps so it was 12 degrees cooler. Then came two new growths. One Leaf produced a sheath but it turned yellow and remained that way for months and I thought nothing would come of it. One day I looked at the sheath and it had a spike with two fat buds growing out of it. So keep praticing good culture and patience and it will happen! Good Luck

Some Catts can be difficult plants to flower. Others will grow and flower like weeds. With proper care and attention, and meeting all cultural needs they should flower.

I have noticed that some picky ones need to be in the pot a few years to come good after a repot.

The bigger the flowers, the less they flower.

Patience will see success.
