| Dennis, mine you can smell from 15 to 20 feet away ! When it flowered for the first time, my wife and I were looking everywhere to find where the scent was coming from, because at that stage we didn't know that some species had scent. Boy were we surprised when we found out the source. We just looked everwhere but not at the Zyg, as "orchids don't have scent, do they ? ". Still took us a little while to accept it. We visited an International Orchid Show here in Adelaide, that same year and purposly went around looking for the scented varieties as an education, and were gobsmacked at how many scented ones there were. Now we know! Come a long way since then.

| You can see it on my Web site : http://www.users.on.net/~op_ink/AD/Z...um_Orchid.html Not sure if you can get that particular cross in the States though.

| good luck at the show have you thought of Coelogyne,s ? as most are scented Laelia,s are another that are scented Dendrochilum,s most are scented Just a couple of ideas for you to think about. |

| Oncidium ornithorynchum is one of the species used to produce Twinkle (the other is Onc cheirophorum), so if you don't like Twinkle's scent you wouldn't like ornithorynchum's either. If you want to branch out into Brassias, Miltonias, or other oncidium alliance orchids, lots of them are fragrant. Lots of the intergenerics are fragrant, too. I just had a large Dgmra Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy' blooming, and it scented the whole room. If you want something with a really powerful scent, try Dendrobium kingianum, or just about any Cattleya hybrid. |

| Gee, I have never noticed any scent from my D. kingianum in the 3 years I've had it. ![]()

| Thanks Ellen. I did purchase two D.kingianums too. As long as they don't smell like veggies or fruits , that will be fine I know I have a long way to go to see flowers in some of them. I have had only three blooms under my care, so far |

| Hi, May be I should clarify my statement!, I have nothing against veggie or fruit fragrances. And I am a strict vegetarian. But I like to keep them separate from the floral fragrances. I hope I did not offend anyone |

| No offense taken! Name any smell and there's probably an orchid that has it. Right now I have one that smells just like coconut, one that smells like old cedar wood and caramel, one that smells like bubble gum and one that smells just like white peonies. One floral out of four ain't bad! The other really interesting thing that you'll notice about orchid scents is that some only produce the scent at certain times of day, probably the times when their pollinators are active in their natural habitat. Other orchids change their scent as the flowers mature. And there really are some that smell like rotten meat. No offense, bulbos. |

| In addition to the previously mentioned fragrant orchids, I suggest Milt. Bert Fields' 'Eileen' (see my icon above

| See I didn't know that... I bought my cirrohpetalum Elizabeth Anne because I found the flowers really nice and neat as they twist and turn when they open, but boy they really stink like rotten meat!? It hasn't shown any signs of growth/deterioation since I had it Nov 2006, so in a way it's a good thing... well maybe not, I still want to see some flowers |
| |||
| i would like to have that one! I think i'll get one that's already mature rather than getting the baby ones. ellen, do you happen to have the name of that particular oncidium? |

| [quote=Ellen; I just had a large Dgmra Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy' blooming, and it scented the whole room. [/quote] Ellen - in February I bought a Bllra.Tahoma Glacier, I've found out soon that the tag was wrong. Searching for information, I discovered that Dgmra Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy' looks very similar.But mine has no fragrance! I'm disappointed seeing that I have an other NoId...
