| too much sun, too cold...? |

We can't tell you if your bulbo is too cold or getting too much sun without knowing what your temps are or how much light you're giving it. What temperature ranges are oyu growing it in and how much light is it getting? What I can say is that to me your bulbo's mix looks quite dry. Most bulbos like to be kept somewhat moist. Does it dry out regularly?

The bulbo is growing inside. My thermostat is set to heat around 71 degrees. It sits in a northeast window and gets about 2-3 hours direct sun. This is the first time I've had an orchid that is hanging in a basket with just sphag. I've been soaking it like every 3-4 days or so, but maybe it needs to be watered more often. |

I water my bulbo everyday , twice a day. So that will give you an idea of how much water it need. But having said that , it does look like fungus problem.

Which bulbo is it? Many bulbos grow in catt light but some will grow in high phal light. The black area looks like water has been trapped in the new pbulb as it was emerging causing it to rot. IMHO I would remove it if the rot travels down toward the rhizome. Most bulbos grow quite moist. I grow most of mine sitting in water or they get watered every other day. A "dry" growing bulbo is one in the winter that needs to dry out before rewatering or the way you water a catt. Brooke |

Yeah they like to be a bit moist all the time, especially at that temperature. The other issue is air movement for the plant, the more I look at it the more I see fungal problems.....hopefully it's not though. I agree with Brooke.

It is a cirr medusae. I definitely am not watering enough then if many of you are watering every day or letting it sit in water. Should I go ahead and remove the leaf then? And then use some kind of fungicide? |

I just want to reiterate Brooke's advice. She is the expert here at growing these, and I follow her advice - and it works! I personally would remove the lead. I agree it looks like trapped water caused a problem, so I would make sure my air movement is good - it is something people tend to forget. I have this one mounted, and while it hung in there, until I set the mount in water, (following Brooke's advice) I wasn't as successful with it. But I got it to bloom this past fall.

Yes medusae is a water hog. If you don't want to let it sit in water you can water daily IF it gets light and air movement. This is one I grow in high phal light, not catt light. When I grew it in catt light the pbulbs got the color of khaki. Reduced the light some and future pbulbs remained a good color. When you cut it off and dab the cut with cinnamon. If the rot continues then bring out the big guns. Brooke |

I have removed the black leaves. They just popped right off. It is now sitting in a bowl of water and I think it must really like it. The leaves are more erect and have a nice crisp feel to them. Thanks to everyone for their help. |
