Light ?

Perhaps a silly question.
When mentioning light in many articles.
It will at times mention x amount of hours of sunlight.
Does this mean direct sunlight?
Thanks

As far as I can tell, no orchid really likes direct sunlight.
Even something like a Cattelya or Vanda likes lots of light, but filtered.

Hope that helps.

All orchids have different light amount requirements weather growing indoors or outdoors this measurement is in fc (foot candles) you can do the sheet of paper and shadow cast from light level to judge and approximate light level measurement. Some people use their meter on their cameras. Others purchase light meters. A book from any book store on orchids like miracle grows orchid book has a section on the shadow test if you want to try that way.
Try and research your collection and group them or arrange them by their light requirements in how you place them in the growing area per light levels in fc.
Are you growing inside or out? And what orchids do you have? We can try and help get you some info also on light requirements or get links for culture sheets for you.
Good luck

In another words , look at how the farmers grow them and emulate that. Can't go wrong too far.

I am going to try and learn this light test.
I grow outside, year-round.
I have several Vanda's and some Dendrobium's.
I asked because I had several get sunburned and are taking their time to recover.
Most of my plants live under my shadescreen I park my car under.
Many of the locals grow theirs under sunscreens of varying filter.
Thanks.
