50f

That would be 10 in celcius...

I'd like to know what you might think about this as a nighttime temperature for growing a Cymbidium, Sarah Jean 'Ice Cascade'

Is this too cool

Just right

Not cool enough

Daytime temps in the same room only reach about 60F (15C) but I can bring it back into the window box where it is now during the day & it would enjoy day temps up into 72-76F (22C - 24C).

Would it 'shock' a Cym to come right in from cool temps to higher temps (I don't have the time or patience or a 'medium' temp room to bring her into higher temps more slowly). And doing this on a daily basis????

Whaddaya think

G'day Frostychic

I have Cymbidium, Sarah Jean 'Ice Cascade' growing in my shade house all year round as hanging plant. Our average nightime temp is around 10C in Winter, and it has flowered every year so far. I'd vote for "just right".

Cheers
Bernie

Hi berniep

Your photo of your Sarah Jean in a thread when you first came here is why I bought mine!!! I was so impressed with it's look that I researche it then looked & looked & looked until I could find one that suited me... I'm so glad you posted on this thread ... is yours in bloom again right now?

If so... please post a new photo of it here. It is such a beautiful plant

Oh, what are your daytime temps like and do your temps climb rapidly? I'd have to bring this cym in from 'the mud room' to the windowbox for warmer daytime temps... but I don't have the luxury of doing it slowly like mother nature would in a midmorning warm-up... do you think this babe can take cool temps then be walked right into warmer temps in the morning?

G'Day Frostychic

Mine flowers June/July here (middle of Winter), we are in the middle of Summer here now. It flowered in June again this year and had grown so much I have had to repot it into a bigger basket and is still growing like mad until next month. It should then have a little breather and set its new spikes. All going well will flower June/July again. As for the temps here it rises fairly quickly as it is up high in the shade house. I will see if I have a pic of this years flowering an will take a pic of where it hangs and attach it here.

Cheers
Bernie

Hiya Berniep...

If you are in the middle of summer now & your night time temps get that low then, how low are your night temps during your winter months?

I thought it was a winter bloomer! Ha... shows how much I learned uhhhh, wait... it is a winter bloomer though, right?!

I guess I better refer back to some culture notes...

Can't wait for your picture... mine is such a slow grower!

They are Winter temps, its about 18C/20C here in the night at the moment. Certainly a Winter bloomer. I have managed to take a pic now and also an old one.
I grow mine as if it has three seasons.

Between Spring/Summer I fert once a week and water twice a week (unless it's raining) All my cymbs are in Bark, charcoal & perlite with plenty of styrofoam peanuts under it for drainage. This my Growing season.
Autumn (Fall)/Winter I switch to blossom booster type fert, to encourage flowering. This is my Flowering season.
MY Resting season is when the flowers are fully out and I have a rest to enjoy them.

Cheers
Bernie

Yours looks like it has grown a lot since last flowering! Great growing

All your plants look healthy... thanks for sharing the pics.

I have taken my cym out to the 'mud room' for overnights ... beginning last night. Brought her in for some great midday (winter) sun from my South facing orchid window today & will continue this thru the spring. The mud room has an East facing window. I'm sure there will be days that I forget but hopefully she'll forgive me

It's waaaay too cold outside for any of my orchids. The mud room seems to work ok for the 3 that I have that need cool nights to trigger blooming

I'm sure it will work fine and look forward to seeing it out next winter.

I grow mine down to 0C but 10C should work just fine. Anything between 0C and 10C would be perfect.

Thanks Bolero... I went searching some data after posting this thread & read that the temp you mention is 'perfect' for them. That's good to know that I've got a few degrees that can drop (this could happen in the deep-dark of the night & I wouldn't know) & not hurt this chid.
