Yellow/Dying Leaves

Greetings fellow orchid lovers,
I have had 10 orchid plants for around 9 months. All of a sudden one or two leaves are turning yellow and dying. Here is what I am doing. I have two on the kitchen table in front of a window shaded by a tall tree outside. They have done very well, so far. In my sewing/comuter room I have 8 plants under 22w florescent bulbs (one is cool white and one is warm) and two very small incandescants to round out the color spectrum. When I hold my hand between the light and the plant, I get a very indistinct shadow. The light looks bright, but from what I've read I shouldn't be overdoing it, am I? Any advice?

To give advice, we will need to know what kind of orchids you are growing. Different types like different growing conditions. Please share more!

First I want to say welcome to the forum
If you don't know what types of orchids you have after you make 5 posts on here you can up load pics and we can start from there with identifying them and get you the proper culture for them.
We will talk to you soon
Again welcome to Geeks

Are the leaves that are dying older leaves, on the bottom of the plant? Is there more than one leaf dying per plant? Some older leaf die-off normally happens from time to time with indoor cultivation (at least it does for me). Welcome, and looking forward to photos!

You say you have two plants on the kitchen table shaded by a tree outside. How far away from the window is the plant? What kind of light? East, south, west or north? It sounds like the plant isn't getting enough light. How far away from the window is it? Are the leaves light green or are they dark green? Dark green means not enough light.

Yellow/dying leaves

I'm back. I apologize for the delay. I am attaching a couple of pics. You have to look close to see the dead leaves. They fell off the plant so I laid them where they were originally. Also note that the light is 19" above the table top. And if you look closely, you can see some indistinct shadows which sould give you an indication of the light brightness. I mentioned the 2 orchids on the kitchen table just as a comparison in different settings. I await your coments. Nancy Well shucks, I can't get the attachment button to do anything. I'll try again tomorrow.

With the lights being 19" above your plants...it's HIGHLY unlikely that you're over-doing it. If that's the only source of light for the sewing room plants, chances are they aren't getting enough light.

When you get a chance...be sure and upload the pics. Also, you've been asked some questions by the previous posters...they are important questions and need to be answered if we are to help you figure this out.
