Cane Yellowing

I bought this Den a few months back.....It was a 2$ item on a clearance table. It had one lonely flower still left on it and was in pretty bad shape. It has kicked out a new growth. The cane that had flowered is turning yellow at the base. Any suggestions on what to do with this thing????? The base of the yellowing cane feels soft so I'm guessing that it's rotting. The new growth has roots but not a lot of them.

i would cut the cane off and spray with physan if you have it or dust with cinnamon...the yellow cane has lived its life and needs to be removed....the new growth looks good! gl

was doing some reading and came across this thread...
Saving rootless Dendrobium canes? do you think that this is a possibility for this cane or is it a goner?

Man I tell ya I have brought home probably more than a dozen rescue Dens and I tell you i've given probably about a dozen away and watched several dwindle away.
Yep nope I will not be growing any dens. :-)

I pulled this Den out of it's pot and gave it a good look...."I dont have a good feeling about this one Scooby" The new cane has two roots one 3/4 on an inch..the other 1/4 in. The other roots there are from the older growth and are not in great shape. I cut the yellowing cane off, one had already been cut, and repotted. Should I keep this moist or let it dry out to stimulate root growth?

Just pot it up and give it good hard cane Den. Culture check out the Aos culture sheet for the hard cane type that you have (was it a phal type?) And hope for the best. That one has a long way to go.

i think only the new pseudobulb have any chance of survive. You need to spray physan as this is fungus problem. Keep it in a humid environment and hope for the best.

Edgy, now that I have read your experience it reminds me, I removed some dead looking canes, don't even know from which den, but a piece must fallen into drawer, of an old chest of drawers I have outside, in which I keep some garden tools and supplies. You can imagine my surprise to see it sprang a keiki with lots of roots, but very white no green yet, because of the lack on light .
I have moved it into the light and will see what happens next.

I got an email from Anton with an article on Den propagation. I took the cane and laid it down on a bed of moist Shpag and covered it with plastic wrap. If I lived in Barbados I might just let it sit out and see what happens...but here in Texas, I'm sure it would just shrivel and die...not enough humidity right now. It may shrivel and die anyway. Since it's not really costing me anything at the very least it will be a learning experience and at best it mayproduce a few keikis.....I'll keep you posted.
