American Orchid Society Electronic Newsletter

The AOS now publishes a monthly electronic newsletter. It includes a lot of interesting things , but one section is orchid information for beginners. This month it concentrates on fertilizing including what to do and not do and why. This is peer reviewed, accepted information that can be relied upon for accuracy. The information this month covers questions that are repeatedly asked on forums and, all to often, incorrectly answered.

There is also an archive of the information presented in earlier newsletters. A good reason to belong to AOS and sign up to receive the monthly electronic newsletter.

Hi Had a quick look to see if any cheaper of overseas membership. Still has overseas membership for an Individual at $92.
It would be much cheaper for them to email an individual a copy, so not change in the fees!

I think Jlu is saying that they are just emailing out a newsletter; Orchids is still being sent out as a printed magazine, which is why membership hasn't changed. With the Australian dollar so close to parity this is probably the closest we'll get to AOS membership being simply expensive rather than ridiculously overpriced.

K and d, I should point out that you need to sign up to receive the newsletter. It is not sent to every member by default. I guess they must have felt that some would consider it e-mail clutter. It is not. I find it interesting to hobbyists at all levels.

Unfortunately it's the cost of Orchids distribution that drives the high cost of Australian membership. That's really too bad, but since the bulk of dues go to magazine distribution, it's just unavoidable. I think you will find that an electronic Orchids is not in the cards. Too many American members reject that idea. I certainly understand your point and probably agree, but I have no solution.

Local clubs in Australia could join AOS and lend the magazines out to members. That might be a reason to belong to the local club. I was messing around on the AOS Forum and found the newsletter link below. I hope it works. If not try deleting the part from the ? to the end of the link. It may be possible to get this without being a member..I'm not sure.

My orchid club, VOC (Victoria Orchid Club), does this. It's a good idea and I'd encourage clubs to do this.

US membership to AOC and ANOS is AU$70 for a bimonthly and quarterly magazine respectively. A subscription to AOR will cost you US$77 for a bimonthly magazine. I don't think the overseas membership costs for the AOS are unjustified. Overseas memberships are just expensive for a society to support no matter where you are.

I receive these newsletters as well, and enjoy them.

No matter how long you've been growing orchids, it never hurts to be reminded of the basics.

Hi, I realize that they have too pay high postage to send it out of America.
Our club gets the 2 Australian orchids magazine and i subscribe too Orchids Australia and the American Phalaenopsis magazine.
This and Orchids Geeks keep me well informed.
I went onto the AOS website and subscribe (free) to their email Newsletter for beginners. Went through OK, see what good info they have in it.

I always look forward to the email newsletters. As Renee said, never hurts to review some of the basics we may take for granted.
