Dancing Lady Oncidium

This is a very popular and common oncidium called Onc. Gower Ramsey. One of the easiest to grow and they bloom easily. They carry spikefuls of yellow flowers, about 1-2 inches wide at the lip, that resemble dancing ladies or dancing dolls.

This is only a small portion of the spike. If you're interested I can put up a pic of the entire three spikes in full bloom.

These plants can double in size and grow very large.

I have a friend that is in the landscape nursery business and I mistook one in front of her home for a hedge. The orchid was 8 feet wide and 4 feet tall with over 4000 flowers. It had been growing outside in SW Flordia for over 14 years. They just add cinder blocks to the sides as it grows wider.

Forgot to mention that there is a hybrid out of Hawaii called Onc. Lemon Heart. It looks about the same with a little less of the brown markings but has the great advantage of blooming 2-3 times a year rather than only once like Gower Ramsey

Sorry it took so long to post the photos of the whole thing--it got lost among the hundreds of other plant photos. They're not scented, though it'll be nice if they are!

Very nice!
My Gower Ramsey is also in bloom right now, and for the first time. Finally, I say! Looks like this is the blooming season for them, at least for those of us not down in Florida.
I'm looking forward to the branching habit that yours has. Mine is just a straight spike, almost three feet long. And I agree: this plant is hard to kill. I brought mine back from near-death when I first received it.

I think that is what mine is. Back then, I didn't know to keep tags. I repotted in a much bigger basket and didn't get blooms for three years or so. It grew though and has filled the basket. I finally got one spike this summer. Its got some new growths starting. I think it needs a repot but I'm afraid to mess with it.

Never mind. Now that I think about it, mine had spidery type flowers. I have dancing girl gingers and my brain got confused.
