Full Sun Orchids

Can anyone tell me if there are any full sun orchids that you grow, I would like to put some outside in the garden but aren't sure about what type?

Vanda Miss Joaquim (national flower of Singapore) and Vanda teres and mostly all vandas. Mine is in full sun and there is no harm for it. They like the full sunlight, only you have to water twice if it is very hot like here in Mumbai,India( 38 C.) Ysanabria is growing some beautiful vandas. Waiting to see other orchids which take full sunlight.

Mani.

The only thing I ever tried was a terete Vanda. I was told by the seller the terete I purchased would take full sun all day, but it still burned...so I put it in morning sun and am slowly trying to work it up to full sun. Other than that I don't have any other suggestions, but the terete Vanda's are really interesting looking.

These are the genera that I have and they like to be in full sun. But before you buy any on these genera check if that particular one likes to be in full sun. But at least this way you can get an idea.
But any plant needs to be introduce little by little to their new location, so I move them every week until they get used to their sunny location.

Ascocenda
Brassavola nodosa
Catasetum
Cymbidium
Evergreen Type Dendrobium
Epidendrum
Oncidium
Schombocattleya Schomburgkia
Vanda

Thanks for the response everyone, I do have a Vanda but it's grown indoors so perhaps another is in order, we also have two Cyms outside.

How many hours of direct sunlight do yours receive daily?

Cyms can take a lot of sun in the morning but filtered sun in the PM. I suppose they would take evening sun also. I found that the leaves on my cyms burn if to much mid-day sun

Of course all of this is relative to the intensity of the light in your geographical area. "Full sun" in New Jersey is going to be different than in Florida, Arizona, or Sydney. Here in Melbourne a lot fo orchids can take full sun in winter, but only the very highest light orchids can take it in the summer. My Cymbids, Cattleyas, and even my Ascocenda burned a couple of summers ago.

Yeah more or less just trying to get some info to gauge things by, figure if others have success with direct sunlight I can make the appropriate adjustments. We have a nice size garden and thought hmmm... I can maybe squeeze some orchids in there if possible!

There was a thread a while ago, that suggested that nobile type dendrobiums are ok in full sun (once they are hardened).

I grow the following in full sun for whole day, in tropical condition where
temperature can reach 40C easily.
Vandopsis lissochiloides
Arundina graminifolia
Papilionanthe teres/Miss Joaquim
Luisia teretefolia
Vanda (terete/semi terete)
Renanthera philippinensis
Spathoglottis
A few Cymbidiums (Cant recall the name)

Some of Catts, Dens and Paph. philippinense can take full sun as well but only for
a few hours. And No afternoon sun.

I have my Vandas outdoors so mine get pretty much all day sun, it's very hot here in Miami in summer can reach to 40C/100F They get some shade from my tall Coconut trees, I live by the ocean so they get as well great breeze and in summer I have them mist every 3 hours

I live in Miami, so you can guide yourself accordingly:

Renantheras,
Rupicolous Laelias
Schomburgkias
Brassavolas

I have burned vandas, catts. My Laelia anceps get full morning sun but anything beyond that burns the plants.

-K-,

I live south you, "down here" in Md. Lycaste aromatica and Rhyncholaelia digbyana grow easily in full sun. Many Oncidium species, also. As with all endeavors of this sort, common sense is mandatory otherwise you'll end up with some fried orchid leaves. Last yr, I burned a couple of digbyana leaves; this year I didn't. Most of my Lyc cruenta take full sun also, except for 1 of 5which had insect damage before going outside.

EXPERIMENT! Books/articles written by/for Floridians or Southern Californians give a limited amount of info.

My vandas do best in just morning sun for the summer. I only go out and water them once a day. I tried full sun in the summer and the leaves kept gettin thinner and thinner. So for the summer I move them where they get morning sun only.

G'Day -K-

I'd plug for Crucifix Orchids as they grow in full sun here and are even grown as flowering hedges. There are some comments and pics Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum species & hybrids) - Queensland Gardening Information (Brisbane & Qld). Hope this helps.

Cheers
Bernie

One of the neighbors has a lot of Bletilla striata growing in her front yard. I believe her house faces west, so there is definitely a lot of sun, but there are also some trees nearby.

thank you everyone for the responses and great information. Now in the process of researching all the recommendations, looking at blooms and all that fun stuff to see what we want and think will work the best for our conditions!

Even a terete leafed Vanda would burn in full sun here in New Mexico. Catts, Vandas, and Cymbidiums have all burned here but would probably be Ok in your New Jersey sun.

The most important question, do you have enough light in the winter to keep the sun lover happy until it can go back outside?

Oh yeah! Should be no problem there! I experimented on one Vanda which was purchased last Oct. and through now it's grown nicely!

Dear Zaeem, you are our neighbour. I am from India. So sorry, you should have kept it in little shade initially, then later to full sun. In our climate they need lots of water also. Anyway, better luck next time.
Regards,
Mani.

Unhappy vandas

MANI, Thanks.Actually they had come from thai nursery in my climate.I had them in shaded area for admiring the flowers, but after flowering started dropping leaves after yellowing.Took them in the orchid room with 50 % shade they did not survive.
even an older plant caught the virus and in weeks met the same fate. Here is the original photo, when they were in bloom.
