oh no! emergency masdie surgery!

well, i guess this is what happens when your masdie tries to bloom and you have absolutely nowhere near enough humidity for it

i wasn't aware that masdie flower spikes have a bract (similar to what the new leaves grow out of) around the flower bud as it develops. had i known this, i would have carefully removed it before. but i went to check on my lil masdie flower, and found the developing bud all wrinkled up on itself inside this bract. these pics are post-surgery for the poor lil thing. it should still bloom ok, i hope, but it sure will be an ugly flower

Uuuuuuuuuuuu, poor thing...
I hope it will push itself out somehow....
I bought my first masdie last Friday. I don't know how I am going to deal with it here in such dry climat. I am thinking taking it down to my basement under lights during the hot days and putting it into my mini GH under lights during the cold winter.....
It's standing in the last row at my South facing window on humidity tray with wet shamies all around it right now........
Good luck with your masdie, looks like a very pretty color......

actually, it'll be red when it's developed...starts yellow then gradually darkens to red. i bought this one in spike...at the time, there was no bud at the end of the spike. so it developed while in my care and did just fine. what went wrong this time i'll never know. same environment, same humidity. *shrug*

This is a common problem with masdies and my solution will guarantee it will never happen again. I'll PM you my address, let me know when you are shipping all your masdies to me.

It sounds like you have a sequential bloomer and even though this bloom will be wonky, the next one will be fine. I have some where the leaf got caught on the bract and now I have a wavy leaf.

Good one!!

Yep...happens to me too. Just like Brooke said...flowers and sometimes even the leaves. Frustrating to say the least!

Most are ok and/or work themselves out w/other flowers (like Brooke said) but I do have one plant that does this 4 out of every 5 flowers. No lie...4 out of 5 get stuck and are deformed. If it doesn't straighten itself out...it'll be finding a new home.

lol darn you! don't tempt me.

but i do know better now. just like with the leaves, i'll do a bit of surgery pre-emptively, before the bud can get stuck. i'm getting to be pretty good at taking those bracts off the leaves by now..........pretty sad, huh?

and i was told when i bought it that it should be a sequential bloomer, but the first spike it had died back before another flower. perhaps it'll keep this one longer.

Doe this apply to all masides or just particular ones and does it produce a new bloom from the same spike or sequential as a new spike will form?

It doesn't happen to most masdies and it doesn't always happen to the next spike on the same plant. When this happens to one of mine it is generally when I am having a heat issue with low humidity.

If the masdie isn't a sequential bloomer, you won't get another bloom from the same spike. What usually happens is you go ahead and get the bloom to open, it is just "wonky".

Now that I think about it, it has never happened to one of my sequentials but I have more single bloomers.

so brooke, assuming this one (Masd. Angel Heart) is a sequential and that the spike does produce another bud, will i have to do surgery on the second bud as well, or will there not be another bract?

See my above answer - I have Angel Heart and it is a sequential. Sometimes, for some strange reason, a sequential will only have one bloom - I do not know why.
