Onc Sharry Baby

I recently re-potted my oncidium sharry baby into 6" plastic pot with holes in the bottom using Primeagra(LECA)as the sole medium. I grow outdoors with bright shaded location with 50 to 60% humidity and 86F temperature.

They say, you can't over water using primeagra(LECA) does it mean I can water my sharry baby everyday?

If not, What is the best watering guide? every 2 or 3 days?

Do you have pics. If you are using straight Primeagra (LECA) you will be watering everyday. Primeagra (LECA) or hydroton can be added to other medium but to use it the way you want the pot must be sitting in a reservoir of water. Primeagra will act like a wick and absorb the water as needed. There is a whole thread on s/h. Here is the culture sheet for your Sharry Baby. There is also the AOS culture sheets for your other chids as well. These will give you the basics on what you need to make you chid healthy and happy. The you can tweak the needs to your area. Oh, almost forgot. When repotting the new pot should have just enough room for 1-2 yrs of new growth.

You will definately have to water every day if you're using leca straight with regular drainage holes. As sunshine stated, a container with a solid bottom and drainage holes about an inch up the sides, will hold some of the water in the bottom of the pot to be wicked up to the roots.

You'll love Sharry Baby~ She's a great plant!

You may have to water more than once a day if you have drainage holes in the pot, the medium will dry out very fast being that the plant is outdoors... Would keep a close eye on it while it's transitioning.

Many of us grow in Prime Agra as a media and it is not the s/h method. The pellets inside the pot do remain moist for several days. I might have to water daily if the container is a basket and the conditions are sunny.

Can you over water the media by watering daily? I don't know but Sharry Baby is a thirsty oncidium so it will be a good test.

Hi Brooks.. Thank you so Much. If Sharry Baby is thirsty Oncidium I guess I have to water everyday, because the 6" pot has 9 holes in the bottom and 20 holes on the side of the pot.

Thank you for your suggestions and insights. Cheers!

I have two Sharry Babies that are in S/H (LECA with a reservoir) and they grow and bloom like mad. You might want to read the sticky at the top of the Semi/hydroponic board, which explains the method:

S/H method explained

It will mean less fussing for you if you adopt this method, but perhaps that is not what you are looking for. The medium I use is Hydroton, which is slightly different from PrimeAgra but works on the same principal.

You might also want to do some reading at Ray Barkalow's site, FirstRays, as he is the guru of S/H growing. He has also posted on this site, and if you search for the name Ray, you'll find his posts.

Thank you Fishmon, I do have some in s/h and it's doing great and I also have some in regular culture using LECA. I really want to use LECA as my sole media because of my watering habit and I am trying one in my sharry Baby. I hope this will turn out good as the one in s/h. Thank you for the links, very educational
