It comes up between the psuedobulb and one of the leafy looking things that are either side of the psuedobulb. In my limited experience, it is usually the side with the longer leaf.

It looks like a spike, slender, smooth and green, unlike oncidium roots which are finer and white.

very different from a new root. roots are white with a green tip, spikes are just plain green.
one pic of each. it's hard to see an onc. spike until they are already pretty long, because they are usually hidden between the outer leaf and the pseudobulb.

That is how I would have tried to explain it Tansy. I'll have to see if mine is on the longer leaf side. Interesting.
Billie Jo, thanks for the picts. Your plant looks happy.
I've got an old mystery plant that seems to have the Onc. characteristics. That is where I check every once in a while for a spike.
Mook, you got a spike?

I have an oncidium and it is spiking now but from what I observed, the medium looked so "rotten" already. I am thinking of repotting it, but I am afraid that it will affect the spiking.

What should I do?

oncidium spikes

Thank you for the pics billy jo. Im not sure i have a flower spike now. There are overlapping leaves that protrude from the base of the psudobulb. Almost looks like a tight braid. Looks like the leaves that come out of the bulb itself.
