I hope my chids like what they see...

We have such heavy and very early snow here. I came home to find my chids looking outside; they look kind of interested. I bet they never witnessed anything like this before........
I hope they are not going to give up by just looking at what is going on outside. They will have to wait just short few month.....
How are your chids (zone 4 and lower) holding on?????...
I wish all cold climat growers a very healthy winter!

The snow brightens the window! We had a couple of snows a couple of weeks ago and now we're back to the 50's and rain. My sun porch (7' x 10') has plastic on the long side of windows, a wall heater and another oscillating heater for when it gets really cold. It's my toasty, humid escape place starting about now!

Snow EWWWWWWWWW. We've gotten some up here in Maine already. None at my house Temps have been pretty mild. All my chids are inside all tucked in warm and cozy. Right now my thermostat is set on 60 degrees due to the mild temps. But here shortly it will go to 68 unless we get some good howling north winds and the wind chill goes below 0 then 72. BRRRRRRRRR.

While the snow looks beautiful, I am not looking forward to its arrival here in the Chicago area. Haven't had any yet and thats fine with me. Your orchids seem to like the view.

how much snow have yall gotten down there? we were told on the news to expect 1-2 feet, but we barely got 4 or 5 inches. i've heard yall down further south got much more than we did though.

i was soooooo hoping for a snow day today but didn't get one. had to haul my lazy butt to classes today in the snow. boo!

lovely phal-type dens. I just recently got a couple. I really empathize you and your orchids. Although the stereotype is great summer weather for us over here (Greece), last 3 winters we had 70-100cm snow in our garden. To be honest i don't miss the snow at all. However every time it snows all my phalaenopsis send up spikes like crazy. We have a saying like a proverb... no bad thing comes without good in it.

Have you noticed your orchids affected by the snow? I think the extra light reflected by snow is what makes them happy.

We have sooooo much snow (see pictures) that I decided to stay home today. It's about 2 feet right now, and more is falling..... All schools are closed!!!!! I'll have to go and shovel my driveway right now.....

Thank you Stelios, most of my Dens are upstairs in the guest room. I just placed two of them downstairs (where the picture is taken) where it's cooler to see where they like better.

It's my first winter with orchids, so I can't tell fo sure what orchids feel right now looking at these mountains of snow outside. I am trying to keep about 60F inside, and orchids are still tollerating. Some Dens are shooting spikes up.
You are right, I have noticed my transitional glasses got soooooo dark outside yesterday. I couldn't understand why (there was no sign of sun) until I realized that there is so much reflection of light from all this snow....
So, I hope there is something good for orchids from snow afterall...
I like snow myself. It's similar to my native climat here in Denver as I was born in Russia (it's Belarus right now where I was born).
One thing I can't get use to is driving in snow/ice - just hate it.......

Thank you Kevin,
You are always welcome to visit..... if you missed snow so much.
We have plenty of this stuff here in Denver.
There is a prediction for a very wet winter here. I am sure the ski resorts are happy....

Yeah, my brother works up at Yellowstone and I think he is waiting for the ski weather there. Although right now he is visiting us in KY and then will head to his gf's over in Poland where I am sure he will get to ski plenty. :P

spasiba. It's the only thing i know that is not bad. I had a colleague from Belarus and she only taught me bad stuff in Ruski.
In our house we don't have central heating only a fireplace down stairs. It can keep the temperature upstairs (where the orchids are) at 12-18 during night. I think that this drop of temperature combined with the extra light is what causes at least my phals to spike and bloom. The good thing is that it never snows more than 3 days continuously so then the temperature rises again, i think that if instead of 15-18 during night we had more days of 12-14 (as when it snows) they would not make it safely.

Yep, Russian bad words could be very strong. Make sure you are using them only when you are really mad.....
That's how I feel right now after shoveling my whole entire driveway and sidewalk...My driveway is one of the longest in the neighbourhood. It becomes 10 times longer during the winter.......

Well it sure got cold for us last night....my min/max therm says the low was 46 F. Considering it was 92F! (33C) two days ago, that is freezing for us!! (BTW - I have a dining room full of grateful orchids)

Kevin I love snow but don't like the COLD, WIND and ICE that comes with it! Spending a month in Buffalo's winter last year was one heck of an eye opener...I thought it might be an adventure for this San Diego girl to experience. Here's how it went:

1st snow day: Cool!! Such beautiful snow! And I get to go out and shovel it off the front steps for the first time in my LIFE!! How Fun!
2nd Day: Damn. It's back again??? You mean I have to go out there and do it AGAIN???
3rd Day: What do you mean "Get the car ready?" Don't you just go out and start it???
3rd Day 90 minutes later: Car is finally descaled of ice and snow so we can finally open the frozen shut doors and get the key in the lock....??AARGGH??!So THAT'S how you get a car 'ready' in Buffalo!??
4th Day: Great!! There's no SNOW, only to soon find out there is two inches of ICE to scrape off 20 feet of steps! I'm just hoping we don't have to go anywhere in the car today.
5th Day: The car and steps are calling me, AGAIN. My lovely cashmere hat and scarf that only see action in Disneyland at Christmastime has had it with Buffalo. Must go to Pick-and-Save and find cheaper attire.
6th Day: Light bulb monent! They sell this stuff called 'Ice and Snow Melter.' Buy it no matter what it costs and spread it generously over entire steps, porch, and sidewalk. Unfortunately - "Not for use on cars". I'm assuming that means people too.
7th Day: This stuff is crap in Buffalo, even tho it said 'Strong Enough For Buffalo Winters' on the bag. See Day 1 minus the words 'Cool', 'Beautiful' 'First time' and 'Fun'.
8th Day: Learn to curse in Russian...I have a month to go!
